Choosing 10 Best Video-Game Movies is a tough task indeed because video-game movie adaptations is a very touchy subject indeed.
Fans will argue until the cows come home about what films should and shouldn’t be on any given list.
It’s ten times more difficult for the filmmakers who helm these video-game adaptation projects.
If you make a feature on a successful video game how do you make it without annoying your fanbase?
If the filmmakers take risks could you risk alienating your audience?
There are many decisions that go into making video-game adaptation movies and some work and some epicly fail.
If you look through our list below the epic fails to stand out as thou they have red flashing neon lights above them!
Regardless we’ve compiled a list of 10 video-game movies that you should watch, even if some are absolutely horrific.
Although there are many more adaptations out there we feel we’ve got the perfect mix of awful and good here. We think…
Whether you’re looking for a fun-family thrill ride to a CGI disaster for comedic purposes. We’ve got you covered.
Here we go!
10. Doom

Well, we’re certainly not ranking these video games based on their movie counterparts. Another awful movie was Doom starring Dwayne Johnson.
Thank god we have the classic game (and the installments since) to rely on for good old quality home entertainment!

9. Assassin’s Creed

I always remember playing the first Assassin’s Creed movie and being absolutely blown away by the gameplay and graphics.
This world that has been crafted around us as we step into this immersive and historic world.
Whilst the film was made much later than the original game’s release in 2007 (similar to many other titles in this list) it’s the game that will always reign supreme.
The less we talk about the Michael Fassbender movie the better. The one film that didn’t do the game any justice whatsoever.
Eesh! That film was bad.

8. Warcraft

Warcraft was a CGI abomination nightmare when it came out but it did so well at the box office that the studio didn’t really care either way.
Many a Warcraft fan flocked to the cinema and left instantly forgetting what they just saw and went back to playing the game.
If my movie made $433m at the box-office I wouldn’t care what we had released. I’ll just wipe my uncreative eyes with dollar bills!

7. Resident Evil

I don’t think it’s just me that gets creeped out by the Licker scene in Resident Evil 2. Heck, even just walking around the Resident Evil 4 map gave me physical chills and I was playing the game on a Gamecube!
How can such an innocent-looking console filled with family-friendly titles put the fear of God into me?!
The movie franchise has been very successful indeed catapulting Mila Jovovich into even higher levels superstardom.
The original films weren’t terrible but as a rule of thumb. Many video game adaptation movies just do not work.
So many divert away from the source content that they spiral out of control and into a chasm of sheer awfulness.
Until very recently that is.

6. Prince of Persia

Running down the side of a wall will never cease to impress me in the very addictive video game released in 2003 game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
I don’t think I even managed to complete the game after just messing around with weapons and wall walking.
Once again another film on the list which spawned a god awful movie
I remember when the film came out that people hailed Prince of Persia as the best video-game adaptation out.
That’s how bad our video game to feature film selections were at the time. Ouch, just ouch.
Thankfully things got much better but only after our next choice.

5. Silent Hill

Sure the film was a little meh but Silent Hill took horror video games to the next level.
It wasn’t a bad video game effort whatsoever. Just including the Pyramid Head scene in the movie was enough for me to instantly place it into the top 5 slots.
The fact the film gave me chills that reminded me of the first time playing the games is all I needed to justify its certain inclusion in this very list.
Now let me peek up behind this sofa and enjoy the rest of the movie.

4. Mortal Combat

Once again, not a great film but it does fall into the so-bad-its-good collection. Many a laugh out loud moment mixed with awful fight sequences.
It just had to be added to the list.
It’s just an absolute carnage of craziness. Well worth a watch if you want to see how NOT to make a video-game to film adaptation.

3. Pokemon

The one video game adaptation that raised the bar for all those who have come before it. Detective Pikachu was charming, funny and the real-world looking Pokemon were superb.
It was a solid movie that brought back oh so many memories of saving up all my dinner money to buy a copy of Pokemon Blue with a new Gameboy. Going hungry paid off as that was one hell of a game!
We’re certainly jumping into quality video-game movie adaptation territory now!

2. Sonic The Hedgehog

When our little blurry blue fuzzball was introduced in 1991 he conquered the world and catapulted SEGA into legendary status.
Fast forward 29 years and we get the Sonic the Hedgehog movie released this year.
Hilarious, bubbly, fun and frantic the new movie has taken what made Detective Pikachu so good and amplified them to new heights.
Jim Carrey puts on a belly-busting hilarious performance reminiscent of 90’s Carrey and everything just works perfectly.
It’ll take some beating to match these levels of Video-Game quality.

1. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

The Spirits Within is an impressive animated marvel indeed. It’s right up there with the best video game movies of all time.
Drawing inspiration from the successful game franchise whilst also paving its own storyline it weaves Final Fantasy magic into a feature-length film.
Paying much respect to the source material is a sure-fire way to success.
This is how you make a video-game movie and I hope that many more true-to-original video game movies flood the market.
