Eurovision The Story of Fire Saga

Much of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is reminiscent of Blades of Glory, another Will Ferrell film with insanely bombastic performances, but quite a bit of heart… here brought by Rachel McAdams.

When Lars (Ferrell) and Sigrit (McAdams) end up in the famed Eurovision competition representing Iceland, chaos ensues and relationships are tested.

Look, this is a rather dumb film; you’re expected to suspend reality in much of it and deal with actors making their best attempts at foreign accents.

Dan Stevens and Pierce Brosnan round out the supporting cast, with Demi Lovato even making an appearance.

Stevens is especially fun here, playing a Russian contestant that befriends McAdams’ character, with his sexuality attempting to be kept secret Stupidity reigns supreme, especially from Ferrell, but that is to be expected.

It’s McAdams who provides balance to Ferrell’s outlandish character with a commitment to the role and the story that clearly looks like she had a blast.

The laughs are few and far between, but when they hit, they HIT. And the music! Who would have thought that music from this film would be as captivating as it was (especially a Glee-style mash-up with a “Song-A-Long” that includes hits from Cher, ABBA, and more).

But the story itself is uneven and lags for great periods of the film. There is a subplot of a villain that never quite pans out, while Stevens’ character also is hinted at having nefarious intentions for most of the film before that just disappears.

A lengthy film with numerous dead spots delivers the laughs and catchy music… just enough to provide a fun film that is a mindless watch.

A blockbuster this is not, but it is enjoyable enough for a time where we need to step away from the dark reality we find ourselves in. I may or may not have added the soundtrack to my Apple Music.
