Music reviews are something you’ll rarely find on Back to the Movies but this one just had to be done. Check out our Nathan Dawe featuring KSI Lighter review.
With every great movie comes a great soundtrack. That one piece of music that is instantly recognisable or linked to a particular scene from your favourite movie.
A song that years later you can always look back and relate to.
For me that’s Blink 182 and Offspring songs used in the American Pie movies.
That Pop-Punk vibe perfectly gelled with that teen-comedy and painted a picture of a carefree time where it was all about girls, parties and good times.
It’s rare that songs come along that make me pay attention anymore. Everything is so copy and paste nowadays and most songs are exploring some sort of political or social commentary point scoring over making a genuinely decent song.
I’m not about that.
When Nathan Dawe and KSI teamed up for Lighter I was always skeptical.
KSI being a YouTuber always comes with skepticism as in these modern times we live in all YouTubers somehow think they can rap all of a sudden.
With a following such as KSI’s you’d assume any song he brings out would make it into Top 10 charts, well, that was until I saw other YouTubers try (and fail) to reach the charts.
Jake Paul is a prime example of that. But for this particular piece we’re talking about good music here actually written by the artist. It’s highly questionable by many that Mr.Paul didn’t write his own material for his latest release ‘Fresh Outta London’. This theory is highly likely to be true considering his previous releases in terms of lyricism read as though they were handed in as someone’s primary school homework assignment.
Taking the leap from poor to free-flowing in the space of a few months seems highly dubious.
When it comes to KSI my skepticism faded upon finding out that the Watford born YouTube star has been killing it of late with his music with three songs that have made it into the Top 10 charts.
KSI has grown as an artist and his lyrics have improved with every song through hard work.
Whilst for me he’s still not there just yet the verse he drops in Lighter is well-constructed and perfectly matched to the song at hand.
Lighters music video is simple. Guys compete at various sports for a girls affection.
The intro to the video is cheesiness on another level but when the beat drops all is forgiven.
The song conveys that happy summer vibe that has shone a light on an otherwise dark 2020. A refreshing summer beat that throws us back to better times of beaches, sun, parties and carefree living.
KSI drops one verse and it’s the only verse featured in the song around the main beat and Ella Henderson’s vocals over the track but it’s enough.
Evolving as a lyricist and with some serious thought put into the words and their alternative meanings is quite refreshing to see.
YouTubers and lazy writing / songs are second nature and their fans lap it up like poodles at dinner time but here we have some genuine talent on display for all to see.
It’s no longer a game, it’s been taken seriously and I applaud that.
Anyone can grab a keyboard, type a badly punctuated article and post it.
Heck, i’ve been making a living off that for over 6 years now but I know a good song when I hear one.
Nathan Dawe continues to be a refreshing talent and KSI is getting better with every track.
Long may it continue.
