It’s crazy to think that even now all these years later that zombie movies are still relevant and show no sign of slowing down so with a broad selection to choose from we list our 10 best zombie movies for you to check out if you haven’t already!
Let’s jump straight into some flesh-eating, brain bashing fun!
Zombieland
The original (and the sequel for that matter) is the perfect zombie film to jump into if you’re a little scared or hesitant to journey into the more serious natured horror flicks.
Blending gore and comedy to sublime effect Rube Fleischer’s zombie comedy launches us straight into some apocalyptic fun.
Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Woody Harrelson this comedy trio bring us a laugh a minute and with a wonderful cameo from Bill Murray himself there’s a lot to love about this zombie epic!
Shaun of the Dead
Are you even British if you haven’t seen Shaun of the Dead?
Edgar Wright’s zombie comedy debut is yet another film to ease you into the zombie genre.
Starring Simon Pegg as Shaun, a nearly 30-year-old man who is forced to grow up and commit to his girlfriend as a zombie apocalypse is brewing under the service.
With just enough gore to keep the die-hards pleased but layered with wonderfully charming British comedy throughout its equal parts gory and heartfelt.
A surprising combination that culminates in a pub lockdown during the apocalypse.
Bit ironic eh?
Night Of the Living Dead (1968)
Going back to where it all began in George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead the phrase “They’re coming to get you, Barbara” will forever be imprinted in every horror fans mind for decades to come.
This black and white independent zombie film kickstarted an entire genre of films.
With many references reflecting on racism, the Vietnam War and pointing out the fact that American’s may only be a danger to themselves this zombie film had some political and social undertones throughout.
Without this film, the birth of the zombie genre would have gone down a completely different avenue than we know and recognise today.
28 Days Later
What if you woke up to a completely abandoned city. No one for miles around. What would you do? Where would you go?
Danny Boyle’s film revolves around a deadly infection that has gripped the country and turned them into zombies.
A film that has amassed a cult following over the years and a zombie film that is absolutely, unequivocally not to be missed!
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Whilst Night of the Living Dead started the whole genre, Dawn of the Dead evolved it.
This beautifully produced masterpiece of horror takes place in a shopping mall.
A place of escapism, an unsuspecting location that is now the hub of a zombie apocalypse.
With insanely detailed practical effects from the master of horror Tom Savini you just can’t look away at this insanely iconic production.
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Out of all the horror remakes since the day I was born 29 years ago, I can count on my hand the number of horror remakes that are equal to or better than the originals.
Dawn of the Dead is one of those movies.
This 2004 remake from Zack Snyder (yes the guy who butchered Justice League) delivered in every single department.
With beautiful cinematography, gripping characters and this wonderful sense of the urgency of survival there really is a suspense and creativity that surpasses the original in terms of the overall tension of the feature.
With the introduction of a zombie baby that has now become arguably bigger and more iconic than the film itself, the Dawn of the Dead remake is well worth your time.
If it was up to me I’d be urging Synder away from messing up DC beyond repair and get back to making incredible horror movies.
Certainly a film that deserves to be amongst the best zombie movies and one that may just be my personal favourite of this entire list.
Re-Animator
Definitely a unique take on the zombie genre as a professional who reanimates dead corpses to horrific effect.
Whilst it’s intended to be a horror-comedy the horror certainly takes centre stage with some shock value moments and a blood-soaked affair from start to finish.
Engrossing, gory and devilishly different Re-Animator is a solid genre classic.
Warm Bodies
Certainly, one I was debating leaving out of the list but I just couldn’t bring myself to it as this zom-com romantic feature has a heart under its flesh rotting surface.
Starring Nicholas Holt playing a zombie that falls in love this charming 2013 movie directed by Jonathan Levine is a zombie movie that is endearing, charming and a joy to behold.
Many descriptive words you wouldn’t necessarily associate with a zombie movie.
Train To Busan
We’ve had zombies on the streets, zombies in a pub, zombies falling in love and zombies in a shopping mall.
But we haven’t had zombies on a train!
Introducing Korean director Yeon Sang-ho that took the zombie genre to a heart-racing level in this action-packed horror.
With the claustrophobic space of a train only amplifying the carnage that follows the unique movement and animation of the zombies completely refreshed a copy and paste genre.
This film is not for the faint-hearted but is one hell of a ride from start to finish.
A feature so gripping you’re more than happy to miss a few stops to see what happens at the end.
The Girl With All The Gifts
Ok, maybe I’m a little bias as I was actually in this movie but I personally feel it’s a solid effort and such a great addition to the genre.
Colm McCarthy ada[ted the well-known novel for the big screen and created such a unique and thrilling production.
Instead of zombies, we have ‘hungries’ characters who live in suspended animation until they are disturbed and all hell breaks loose.
The zombies actually take a backseat in this production as a young girl and star of the show Melanie is a hungry who can talk.
She still craves human flesh but she is still self-aware and conscious.
Her existence could be the key to the future of the planet and to unlocking the secret of how to potentially change these ‘zombies’ back.
So there are my 10 best zombie movies that you really should check out.
