Wrath Of Man Review: No Messing From Guy Ritchie

Nick Clement brings us his Wrath of Man review.

Wrath of Man Review

Mysterious and wild-eyed, a new security guard for a cash truck surprises his co-workers when he unleashes precision skills during a heist.

The crew is left wondering who he is and where he came from. Soon, the marksman’s ultimate motive becomes clear as he takes dramatic and irrevocable steps to settle a score.

I enjoyed this very much. No messing about from co-writer/director Guy Ritchie, who left behind all of the flamboyant stylistic tics and editorial spazz-attacks that have marked much of his work (I’m a fan overall, but there have been some questionable items…), and confidently told a straight-ahead crime story, with a crisp and clean eye for all of the violent shoot-outs and robbery sequences that you’d expect from this milieu, of which there’s a ton of.

Jason Statham was his usual bad-ass self and was well suited to the brevity of his character’s exposition – just as much is conveyed through action and reaction as it is via the spoken word.

There’s nothing new here on a story level, but it’s just a good slice of genre storytelling, that’s been well told, and while I guessed a couple of the plot particulars, there were a few narrative swerves that I didn’t see coming, which is always refreshing to have happen.

The very macho supporting cast includes solid work from Darrell D’Silva (love this guy!), Scott Eastwood (he’s got his dad’s eyes), Josh Hartnett (where you’ve been hiding?!), Holt McCallany (big fan), Eddie Marsan (En-Ra-Ha!), and Jeffrey Donovan.

Released earlier this year to strong reviews and good pandemic-era box-office ($102 million worldwide).

Wrath of Man is available on Blu-ray/DVD and via various streaming outlets for pay rental viewing.

Summary

Whilst the story is nothing new the delivery and execution is raw, gritty and exactly what you’d expect from a Guy Ritchie feature. Thoroughly enjoyable and well worth a watch!
