The Fall Guy IMAX Review: A Love Letter to Unsung Heroes

The Fall Guy is a film that needs to be seen on the big screen and with IMAX on top the stunts come alive!

IMAX perfectly captures every car chase, explosion and stunt in beautifully immersive detail, coupled with an incredible soundtrack that features bands such as Kiss and The Darkness they’re onto a winner before the first piece of the puzzle unravels. 

The Fall Guy is a love letter to the unsung heroes of Hollywood movies being shot every single week. A wink and nod to the stunt guys who put their bodies (and lives) on the line to create motion pictures.

David Leitch (a former stunt performer might I add) has created an absolute movie-lovers paradise as we go behind the camera in one regard and are front and centre of it in the next.

Hollywood has a little pop at itself while celebrating these brave and talented individuals, it is a poke at itself with many gags and inside ‘film crew’ jokes whilst also keeping its audience hooked from start to finish.

Roped within this showcase of stunts galore there’s a mystery-noir plot as superstar Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) goes missing during a shoot and it is up to retired stuntman Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) who drags himself out of retirement to help save the film directed by the love of his life Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt).

A movie within a movie as this layered yet easy-to-follow movie is expertly delivered with Ryan Gosling oozing charm and cool guy image that even Ken would be envious of (I don’t think he’s ever going to get over that Barbie movie).

The great thing about The Fall Guy is that whilst you may have seen the plot before (quite a few times) having it on-set of a movie production and having a stunt guy at the heart of it gives them the freedom of creativity.

Whether it’s badass stunts or just incredibly written dialogue between characters there’s a camaraderie here that gels the film together to the point where the copy-and-paste plot can be forgiven.

As to be expected from a film like this the stunts (behind the stunts, so meta) are superb with car flips, helicopter stunts, fight sequences, jumps and more. It’s plastered with high-octane action whilst also giving us a little behind-the-scenes of just how some of these Hollywood action stunts are shot for real.

Comedic timing is ‘chef’s kiss’ in The Fall Guy and there’s a real classic movie feel about The Fall Guy that’s endearing. 

Seeing this on the big screen is an absolute must! I’m a champion for IMAX when it comes to big Blockbuster movies and whilst Godzilla X Kong sucked, the action was incredible on the big screen.

The Fall Guy is made for the big screen and as it’s the latest IMAX to open in the UK I can’t recommend going to see it at The Backlot in Blackpool.

Not only a cinema but a restaurant and hangout. The Backlot is teaching the big boys how a cinema should be done and their comfy seats and brand new £1 million IMAX projector will make you feel right at home in no time.
