Starring a much younger Johnny Galecki (Big Bang Theory) Bookies is a 2003 movie that’s witty, daring and funny.
Tired of constantly losing money on sports bets they’ve been placing with local mobsters a group of guys start their very own bookies and decide to chase the American dream for themselves. What starts out as a widely successful business soon starts putting not our their friendships but their lives in danger.

Premiering at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, Bookies is scattered with comedic moments that keep you entertained from start to finish. A film that focuses on the old paper bookmaking rather than the online betting sites craze of today. Bookies is all about young lads having fun, trying to fulfil an American Dream and hints on more serious topics of love and relationships. Bookies is peppered with comedy and will keep you entertained throughout.
Johnny Galecki is the shining saviour of this movie stealing every scene that he’s in. It’s by no means a unique character that he portrays but my god is it a solid and hilarious portrayal nonetheless.

If I had to be picky I would say the only part of this movie that provides quite a let-down is the bouncing between one situation to another without much of an explanation in-between. We get the general gist of what is going on but at times it just feels as thou the movie has skipped over something that it shouldn’t be. It’s a fast actioned plot which don’t get me wrong is fun, but at times makes you feel a little in the dark in terms of some of the events taking place on screen. It got me a little confused but then again that really does not take much.
A movie that keeps you on your toes as you never quite know which way it’s going to go, throwing you around the room in a tense yet funny Mexican stand off. Bookies is a film that you bet will keep you entertained and as it goes on will start to draw you in and force you to love it.
