I can’t remember the last time I went to a circus, I must have been very, very young and I can’t for the life of me think of a reason why I haven’t been since.
As fate would have it driving past Newcastle-Under-Lyme on a journey home one night I saw a huge big top circus tent.
The UK’s largest circus Gandeys was on tour. I’ve heard so many good things in the last few days about them that I had to go and check it out for myself!

Billed as the Greatest Show the 2-hour performance had singing performances as aerial artists swung each other around in romance using silks dangling from the ceiling.
We had live dancing and acrobatic shows, high-wire performances and the death-defying wall of death where three motorcycles drive around a small metal globe at insane speeds narrowly avoiding each other at any given moment.

The acts involved in the show came from all across the globe and it’s clear to see these are some of the best in their field.
A contortionist who had me physically wincing at his extraordinary maneuvers and a girl spinning hula hoops that were then set on fire balancing on a giant medicine ball!
Every act in the show had an insane element of danger to it and with the lack of safety equipment in the venue, it made the show even more exciting to watch!

Chico Rico the Circus clown provided some hilarious audience interaction moments including a boxing match using 4 audience members as ring corners and another member as the contender to fight against Chico.
The show has elements of humor suited to people of all ages.

Gandeys big top had an indoor food stand with cotton candy and popcorn also being served throughout and it was cool to see that many of the acts were also behind the counters of each stall.
A real big family vibe as all circuses should be.
I will say thou however the prices were a little steep for a rolling food truck but a circus can naturally charge theatre prices.
Having a picture taken with a giant lion costume for £2 however, was slightly cheeky I must say!

My favorite acts were the space wheel and the wall of death. Naturally, the biggest set pieces of the show these death-defying pieces of equipment looked sinister and at any moment it could have all gone horribly, horribly wrong.
There was a little mishap on the wall of death that had my heart in my mouth but the guys stayed professional, started again and nailed it!

There were no dull moments throughout the show. When the equipment was being moved and taken off stage there were other acts performing to distract the audience from the tidying up session. It was a nice smooth transition and what a show it really was.
Gandeys really set the bar high by labeling their show ‘The Greatest’ but my god they didn’t disappoint!
The circus will be in Newcastle-Under-Lyme until March 17 so get down quickly before its too late!
