We’re already four episodes in to Picard on Amazon Prime and things are finally spicing up.
Picard is now in space with this makeshift crew but it’s a crew we know now somewhat of a backstory about.
It’s all piecing together rather haphazardly but they’re all on-screen together and that’s all that matters.
Our episode begins 14 years ago on the planet Vashti where Picard and Raffi helped refugees during a Romulan crisis.
The Admiral develops a soft spot for a young orphan boy who he wishes to take care of him. Quite the contrast to Next Generation Picard who was uncomfortable around children!
During the Mars attack, Picard had to leave.
Episode 4 has Picard finally returning to the planet looking for a new crew member to join him.
What I find strange here is the crew that Picard has assembled. Either he’s completely lost it or he’s clutching at straws here.
Everyone seems to hate one another but this does lead to some interesting interactions, to say the least.
These quest type episodes aren’t drawing us into a full spectrum series. Each episode feels like a standalone piece with no sequence or linear motive to them bar the very surface level find and rescue mission.
It all feels very basic and whilst we’re digging deeper with every episode we’re currently four episodes in and nothing of note has happened. Still.
It’s starting to drag and the series is already suffering at such an early stage.
A side story between Soji and Narek (A Romulun) is just a distraction away from a poor plot. A love story with a sinister twist. It’s very soap-opera.
The salvation of this episode is the return of a very familiar face indeed.
The silver lining in this otherwise lethargic episode.
Overall

It’s nice to see Picard back in space with a new bunch of misfits as crew members but so much time is spent on the past it’s damn near impossible for the story to progress forward to a future.
Let’s hope Episode 5 can improve!
