Sonic the Hedgehog is flying towards a $65 million opening weekend in North America according to estimates.
Originally estimated to make between $40-$45 million prior to launch it’s flying higher than expected.
If the estimates hold it’ll break last year’s record holders Detective Pikachu ($54 million) for the best three-day domestic opening for a video-game movie adaptation.

A chance encounter with Thomas Wachowski (James Marsden) has them become buddies and on the run from Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
A man who the government has hired to track the source of a mysterious power outage caused by our little blue devil.
Thrusting Sonic into this live-action world really is incredible. Never take this film too seriously. Ever.

Birds Of Prey has already been thrown off the top spot by our blue furry friend and rightly so, becoming the worst performing DC Extended Universe movie released to date.
Projections for this weekend are bleak. The DC movie is set to suffer a 50% plunge in its second week in the cinemas. Ouch.

Bad Boys for Life is still going strong at the box office five weeks after release ($12 million this weekend alone) which is fully deserved.
Fantasy Island the new take on the 1977-1984 series with a dark, sinister twist got mixed reviews but will pull around $13-15 million this weekend.
Downhill starring Will Ferrell and Jilia Louis-Dreyfus will open with a rather disappointing $5 million.
Overall

Our little blue bundle of fur has raced above expectations and is flying towards a very impressive grand total.
We are finally entering an age where video-game movie adaptations are improving in quality.
Detective Pikachu, Angry Birds 2 Movie and now Sonic are three very impressive titles indeed.
Many diehard DC fans were campaigning to make sure that Sonic failed at the box office.
Thankfully common sense prevailed and our little speedster has raced to the top of the charts leaving their DC competition behind in the dust.
