Kate and Koji Episode 5 Review: Easy, Breezy, Comedy

Kate and Koji Season 1 Episode 5

The penultimate episode of the brand new ITV comedy, here’s our Kate and Koji episode 5 review

When Kate’s flashy ex-husband Dennis arrives in town with his much younger wife, Kate feigns an attachment to Koji.

Councillor Bone is sure their relationship is a front, but that doesn’t stop a good old-fashioned show down at the pub.

With episode 4 of the ITV series certainly being the weakest link of the series so far I was crossing my fingers for an upswing in both comedy and character dynamics between Kate and Koji.

Up until this point the show hasn’t explored its two key characters connection whatsoever. They both co-exist in the same cafe’ but with limited interactions it makes you wonder why the show was called Kate and Koji at all.

Episode 5 once again reconfirms that the title of the show should have been called Medium and Koji. Medium (Blake Harrison) and Koji have more interaction and chemistry than any other character in question.

Whilst i’m disappointed the relationship wasn’t explored in more detail throughout the series this episode does venture outdoors for the introduction and brings a fresh change of scenery. It’s here where this relationship finally starts to bloom.

Kate and Koji’s strongest scenes have been outside of the cafe’. Sadly they don’t stay outside long enough to draw out the comedic moments. The cafe’ should be used as a hub where everyone is back together again. Almost like how Monica’s apartment was used in Friends.

Episode 5 hits on an emotional note as Kate see’s her husband again and he’s moved on with a young, beautiful multi-lingual lady. The scene feels as thou it’s going tog go down an emotional route and just stops.

The show twists this angle as in a desperate attempt to compare Kate tells her ex husband she’s marrying Koji.

But instead of amping up the chemistry between the pair once again Koji is just there to aid the story without any sort of proper relationship or friendship between them explored.

UNTIL….

The final 5 minutes of the episode has Koji standing up for Kate in the most dominant display of emotion and friendship to date. A brief glimpse at the first blossom of this fruitful friendship.

Exploring the friendship between them happened outside of the Cafe’ environment. This change of environment and scenery allows room for this friendship to blossom.

The comedy in episode 5 is certainly funnier than the previous. There are some hilarious one liners and this fake sham of Kate pretending her and Koji are an item.

It’s breezy, easy and funny TV.

With the last episode airing next Wednesday it’ll be interesting to see if a season 2 will be in the works.
