American Gigolo Amazon Prime Review: A Box-Office Hit

Nick Clement brings us his American Gigolo Amazon Prime review.

Julian (Richard Gere), a gigolo, commands high prices for his services, living a lavish if emotionally unattached lifestyle under the management of Anne (Nina van Pallandt).

While secretly working for pimp Leon (Bill Duke), Julian is assigned to service Mr. Rheiman (Tom Stewart) and his wife, Judy (Patti Carr), but leaves when their violent requests make him nervous.

When Mrs. Rheiman is found dead and no one is willing to testify on his behalf, Julian finds himself the primary suspect.

I also own this sharp morality tale on Blu-ray; the film is definitely one of the most potent pieces of work from legendary writer/director Paul Schrader (Blue Collar, Auto Focus, Cat People, First Reformed).

American Gigolo, which was released in 1980, challenged audiences upon its initial roll-out and still remains fascinating and relevant today as an exploration of not only the body but of the mind.

Richard Gere gave one of his definitive performances as a sexual hustler always looking to stay one step ahead of the game.

The female eye-candy on display is striking (insane amounts of Lauren Hutton POWER), and it must be said, Gere was a physical specimen all throughout this sexy piece of storytelling.

Splashy composer Giorgio Moroder did the hypnotic score, while eclectic lenser John Bailey called the slick and stylish shots from the cinematographer’s chair.

Armani POWER.

Produced for $5 million and grossing $23 million, the film was a box office hit, and was well received by critics, and has only gained in reputation throughout the years.
