Annie Regent Theatre Stoke Review

Originating from a comic in Daily News from 1924 the history behind this story is absolutely remarkable. Its had four film adaptations in 1932, 1938, the most famous one in 1982 and finally one in 2014. The 1982 film became a hit mainly due to the Broadway success it achieved earning it two nominations for Academy Awards for Best Production Design and Best Song Score. And now you can relive the iconic musical by seeing it on this tour.

Lesley Joseph and Alex Bourne are no strangers to the roles of Miss Hannigan and Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks. Annie is played by Mia Lakha along with her co-stars who are known as The Chrysler in the programme. Carolyn Maitland plays Warbuck’s receptionist Grace and Richard Meek and Jenny Gayner play the villainous coupling of Rooster and Lily. There are a host of very talented actors and actresses in different roles adding to the sheer talent this musical has.

The first act was constant, hyperactive momentum as a musical with show stopping songs, gap dancing talents and even a labradoodle playing Sandy. Its a top class, pedal to the metal performance that has a mix of everything. The second act keeps the momentum, but focuses more on the story angle. The set for Annie is one of the best production sets I’ve seen for a while. The jigsaw puzzles scattered at the back along with the efficient use of props made it smooth with transition and even more compelling. Each scene felt like it was at a different place entirely.

Overall
Despite it being based on The Great Depression it shines a ray of sunshine with its beautiful story and priceless list of songs. For those who have never seen it live it is something that should be carved into your to do list. Lakha was absolutely tremendous as Annie and effectively made the show hers along with Team Chrysler who owned the show. Every actor and actress on that stage gave something vital to its success. Annie The Musical still remains as timeless and uplifting as ever.
