The first teaser trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water has been released but it feels like we’ve been here before.

Giving us a glimpse of the highly anticipated sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar I can’t help but feel as though this particular sequel (and the subsequent ones scheduled thereafter) have really missed the boat here.
The first movie was released in 2009 and absolutely blew cinema apart with its vibrant visuals, incredible story, insane direction and Blu Ray format introduction changing how we watched movies at home.
Fast forward to 2022 and just watching the trailer has less impact. It’s not as impressive as it was back then, it looks very samey, samey and for a world that no one has invested in for a good decade it’s hard to see how we’ll be dragged into the story alongside the Navi once more.
With this new short attention span generation flicking through numerous Tik Tok videos and social media it seems only Iron Man and his Marvel pans can hold out cinematic attention for longer than a few swipe right or left seconds.
Of course, this is Avatar, of course, it’s going to do incredibly well but I can’t help but worry that the reception will be dampened with this ever-changing world we live in and for Avatar, it certainly (for me at least) feels like they’ve missed the boat.
I also get the vibe that the Navi have stumbled into Aquaman’s lair from the trailer relying heavily on soft nostalgic score to remind us of how truly brilliant the original was whilst presenting a new story.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
Starring Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Vin Diesel, Jemaine Clement, and Oona Chaplin alongside returning cast members such as Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver.
The sequel is currently scheduled to arrive in theatres on December 16, 2022
