Baywatch Review: Cheesy Good Fun

Boobs, beach and Baywatch. The movie adaptation of the 1990’s TV series certainly brings home a modern comedic touch, cheesy over the top (heavy on the CGI) action scenes and bromance comedy between our leads Mitch (Dwayne Johnson) and Brody (Zac Efron). These guys have great chemistry on-screen and help the plot to drive along an albeit bumpy road but they always seem to rise over the little hiccups along the way.

The plot revolves around Mitch and Brody and the gang who all uncover a criminal plot that threatens the future of the bay.

Baywatch Review

Now you’d think that Dwayne and Zac would steal the show in this movie, but you’d be wrong. There’s one guy who shined brighter than all the rest. That man  was Jon Bass who plays the character Ronnie Greenbaum. An out of shape yet loveable character who has failed his lifeguard trials numerous times and on this occassion gets a pass through sheer determination alone.

His comedy has that Josh Gad, Jonah Hill essence to it which draws you in, hooks onto you and makes you laugh every time. An incredible performance and a character you can’t help but love. Head over heels in love with the new CJ Parker (Kelly Rohrbach) Ronnie goes from a quivering and shy wreck to quite the stand out performer.

This evolution of character was more of a joy to watch than anyone else’s character arc on screen. I felt Brody’s character arc boomeranged rather quickly, his change of attitude and character seemed almost instant. Mitch’s character arc was a relatively straight line in from start to finish in all fairness.

As the female lifeguards of Baywatch played the background roles of love interest, eye candy or sidekick which was a shame to see, it was nice to see the villian of the movie was the character Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra). Victoria has a plan to buy up all local business’s around the bay and the ones that refuse will be ‘persuaded’.

Corruption is ripe around the Bay as Victoria’s dastardly plans unfold. It’s up to the Baywatch team to figure out just what’s going on and get to the bottom of it.

Get that stick out of your ass, go in with an open mind and have fun! Everyone on this film is having a blast and I for one, salute you all!

Baywatch gets it’s digital release on September 21st, ahead of the DVD and Blu-ray release on September 25th
