Candice Short Film

We walk past hundreds of people every day.

Hundreds of people we don’t think twice about.

Hundreds of people that we never stop and talk to.

Hundreds of people we’ll never see again.

But what if we did…

Candice is a short film about what happens when we get talking to strangers in the modern urban jungle and how we build new relationships in a world where we have never been more connected electronically, but have never been more isolated socially.

Candice Short

The film follows Candice, a lonely thirty-something, around East London over the course of one fateful night as she learns that first impressions aren’t always everything.

As Candice walks home a man follows, instantly a darker assumption takes a hold of not only us as the audience but of Candice also.

A shadowy figure following her home and her paranoia blends with her anxiety as she suspects this person could be dangerous.

We’re pre-conditioned to put up our shields when threatened and instantly go on the defensive.

Candice Short Film Review

We get suspicious, worried and then some people go on the offensive.

In a world where we’re lost in a digital realm, it’s hard to come to grips with the real world.

We can easily engage in a conversation over a Facebook chat or edit our life highlights painting this picture of a perfect life on social media for people to see.

But in person, that facade fades and at the end of the day, most of us just aren’t very good actors living in a world of broadcasted negativity.

Force-fed negativity through social channels, force-fed negativity through the news and no wonder we’re usually disconnected not only from life itself but from connecting with others.

Granted walking through East London at night would raise a red alarm for anyone with common sense but judging someone before they’ve even done anything is at the centre of this short.

Candice Review

Candice was a short film where I forgot about what I was seeing in terms of cinematography or acting.

It was a film where I reflected on us as people.

Our assumptions, our judgements or interpretations of not just people but situations.

Candice Review Short Film

It doesn’t exactly paint us in a great light.

But as Candice finds out, you never judge a situation at a surface level.

From a negative to a positive Candice takes us on a 9-minute ride of social construct.

Candice instantly walked out of a bar with her friends on a night out to be alone, this social isolation is a common trend with many who are so wrapped up in a digital world they forget how to interact in the real world.

It’s a stark reminder, if anything, to just put your phone down once in a while, stop judging others before they open their mouths and live in the real world.

You may just learn a thing or two.
