It’s been many years since your archaeology professor vanished while on an expedition. You decide it’s time to follow his trail, bring his research to light, and fulfil a promise. It will be dangerous. Something claimed the professor, it could claim you too. Welcome to the Tomb of Montezuma at GAME OVER Derby.

GAME OVER Derby Reception

It was our first trip to GAME OVER Derby and our main reason for the trip was to take on the Saw themed escape room named ‘Maniac’ that they had at the premises. Unfortunately, this room was undergoing maintenance and it was closed which was just our luck. We decided to check out another room whilst we were there instead. With all the rooms being movie / TV themed at GAME OVER we chose to do the Indiana Jones style room. One of the most difficult rooms in the building. There was only two of us doing the room so our chances of success were very slim indeed. I just wanted to get inside and check out the scenic detail of the room as online it looked impressive indeed.

With a game of this complexity naturally, there are quite a few puzzles to do. The majority of mechanisms and magnetic attachments to the room were very clever indeed. Some worked on sequential systems and not just your one magnet opens one door kind of deal. Very impressive.

GAME OVER Derby Goodies

The puzzles were more inventive than ones I’ve seen at any other escape rooms, they were quite fun and engaging. Sadly some paint on areas of clues were rubbed off which proved quite the hassle. A paint job in some areas wouldn’t go a miss!

The game wasn’t immersive in the story as such, it was more just very well themed. It certainly made itself known that it was an escape room and not an Indiana Jones style tomb. The theming was very polystyrene orientated and some pieces were quite damaged throughout but the level of detail was impressive for a room regardless.

A few nudges were needed from the room operator as they were a little too complex for our two tiny brains to handle. But after all is said and done our operator really interacted well with us and we could talk to him whilst in the room which is something I haven’t experienced at other rooms. Sometimes the audio on his mic would go funny and his guidance was a little muffled but we got there eventually.

Overall

The Forbidden Temple of Montezuma at GAME OVER Derby is a cool little room. Certainly a room where 3 or 4 people would have been more helpful but we did ok. We were given extra time (out of pity) and did manage to complete it eventually. I’ll certainly be back very soon to attempt the Saw escape room. It’s time to play a game!
