Game of Thrones Dark Hedges Trees Felling Begins

Hopefully they don’t cut down anymore as today work began to fell 6 of the infamous Game of Thrones Dark Hedges trees in Northern Ireland.

Game of Thrones Dark Hedges

Today six trees were cut down in the famous beauty spot after the imposing tunnel of beech trees are slowly rotting and its causing a safety issue for visitors.

The trees will be removed and remedial work has been carried out on others as part of the project which will see the site closed to visitors.

Some of the trees are 250 years old far outliving their 200 year life expectancy so they need constant work and monitoring and remedial work is key to keeping them staying upright for the foreseeable!

As part of the process the trees will be cut slice by slice and they’re trying to chop down as little as possible but branches that have fallen already have already found their way into keen hands who were quick to put some of the branches up on eBay.

The Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust says that the trees’ “advanced age has caused them to grow in an unusual, twisted manner creating the universally recognised atmospheric phenomenon we see today”.

Famously seen in the first episode of the second season as Ayra Stark makes her escape down the Kingsroad in a car.

The Game of Thrones Dark Hedges trees are famous amongst series fans to visit and a site that has caused major traffic disruption due to their popularity the Save the Dark Hedges campaign has said that a surge in footfall to the area has made damage to the trees even worse.
