When an Ang Lee movie is released, people take notice. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is as close to perfect as a film can get. Life of Pi was nothing short of a technological masterpiece.
If you walk out of the cinema hating Gemini Man you will at the very least appreciate the futuristic technology employed in this film. A retiring Assassin (Will Smith) is suddenly hunted down by his younger self. That’s all you need to know as far as the plot goes.
Sci-fi movies never strike that fine balance of storytelling. It’s either too out there and confusing or too basic and dull. Gemini Man bounces in the rather dull section with a lacklustre script and dim plot but makes up for it with Will Smith power, cool action scenes and impressive tech on display.
Some great action sequences including a bike scene and a catacombs fight scene have you believing that Will Smith is fighting an entire differently character rather than himself.
When the sunlight, however, hits them both standing together at the end of the movie it’s laughably bad! Aside from the last scene glitch the technology on display is very impressive and equally scary. How else could that tech be used to manipulate video in the future? Now THAT’s a scary thought.
The action sequences are also shot very close to the subject. Shot in a very strange 120fps the closeness of the scenes feels as thou you’re sitting behind the camera.
It’s not really noticeable just how close everything is unless someone points it out thou, otherwise you wouldn’t really be paying too much attention to how it’s shot (well I didn’t anyway).
Gemini Man 4DX Review
Ignore the critics, it really isn’t as bad as everyone is making it out to be but sadly 4DX was somewhat wasted here. We had a wonderfully promising opening sequence as a train whizzed past. We were hit with a whoosh of air, the next minute our seats are rumbling. It felt as thou we were on the train itself. It was a great start to the movie!
We also had a scene later on where Will is on a boat and the seat is rocking as tho we were on the waters with him. Scents of fresh sea air was pumped into the cinema that really created the mood. Muzzle flash strobe effects during the fight sequences was absolutely another highlight.
4DX only comes into play during certain sequences. Due to these certain sequences being short lived throughout Gemini Man we only had a short-lived taster of the tech.
It’s going to take some beating to dethrone Lion King where we felt the experience was tailored meticulously to what is occurring on screen.
Gemini Man is certainly a teaser of what 4DX offers but the film itself certainly limited the full 4DX experience.
