Gordon Gino and Fred Episode 4 Review
ITV

From Mexico to San Francisco this four-episode cuisine journey comes to an end as the boys head to Texas.

It’s been laugh-out-loud from start to finish and the chemistry that I mention in every single episode hits its highest level in this beautiful finale.

Sad to see it end all so soon this show has been the shining light amongst any programming I’ve seen since isolation began. The boys saved the best for last as I personally felt this was the funniest episode of them all.

“There is nowhere on the planet that does a BBQ like Texas,” says Gordon as the episode starts and he’s certainly not wrong.

Episode 4 has the guys exploring BBQ cuisine, cowboys, fishing, dancing and rodeo.

I’m a huge fan of BBQ cuisine, and I mean huge! Watching this episode had me salivating at the thought of my local Hickory’s smokehouse opening the second the craziness is over. Hickory’s is the closest smokehouse in the UK that even comes close to being similar to Texan / Kansas style BBQ food.

After teasing me with BBQ treats the guys head into the woods to try their hand at chopping food. Gordon is certainly the alpha male of the group that has been clear since episode 1 but seeing Fred in pink shorts in front of two Texan lumberjacks is side (and log) splitting to witness.

As Gino attempts to chop into a trunk but doesn’t have much luck, the lumberjack tells him: “My daughter can chop better than that.

After some hard work (on Gordon’s part) the trio takes a dip in the Blue Hole, a natural pool. It doesn’t take long before Gino is up to mischief as tears fill my eyes with laughter at the next few scenes.

This episode does seem to bounce around a lot between various destinations which has been a highlight of this series.

There’s not one single scene in this entire series that has been boring to watch. Choppy editing, lots to see, lots to do, I’ve been engaged from start to finish it really has been a journey. Albeit a short-lived one.

I really wish there were more episodes than just the 4 initially shot.

A night in an outback shack is the true test of the boys and men. The group attempt to survive in this snake and Aligator surrounded cabin. With the help of some whiskey and beans they get through the night but not without some nervous stomach trouble for poor Gino.

Gordon says “This is one of the most exciting trips I have been on. Texas is all about manhood and sharing it with Gino and Fred, it’s nice to bring their inner manhood out.

It’s when the group arrive in Austin is when the comedy takes it up another level. A trip to Allen’s boots has the boys kitted out in full cowboy attire. Gino’s costume is certainly lacking a little material in the back.

Not exactly the cleverest idea to be walking about Texas looking like a gay cowboy. Gino’s sheer bravery (or stupidity) is hilarious. It’s certainly the cheekiest episode of the series I’ll say that much!

After a little dance at a saloon (and a game of Texan bingo) the episode ends after a rodeo where Gordon, Gino and Fred cook up a BBQ treat for the locals.

Speaking of the cuisine Gordon says: “I think the misconception back home with American cuisine is that it’s big and bold and tasteless. But delve in off the beaten track, there’s a passion there beyond belief…when you find it, it’s beautiful.”

This last-supper scene brings it home that this is the final episode and it’s sad to see. These last four episodes have really transported me away from the craziness that is happening right now.

It’s incredibly sad that this rollercoaster of emotions is coming to an end.

Overall

Gordon Gino and Fred Texas
ITV

The last scene of the show rather solidifies the fact that this whole series hasn’t been solely focused on food.

It’s been about friendship, family, a bond, to live your life to the fullest and to savour every moment. Never take anything for granted and enjoy the finer things in life.

Money is temporary but memories last forever.

Gino says: “As far as a trip, an experience, is concerned, this has been the best trip ever.”

Fred says: “I’m just going to miss the boys because I genuinely love those guys.”

On behalf of everyone in the United Kingdom, we’re going to miss you guys too.

The most fitting finale for what has been the funniest show on television in 2020.
