HBO Max Most Popular Movies and Shows

Friends Reunion

With HBO Max celebrating its first year, the guys over at Just Watch have put together some research showing a top 10 of HBO Max most popular movies and shows.

Top 10 Shows on HBO Max in the First Year

HBO Max Shows

Unsurprisingly, Friends tops the list as the most popular show on HBO Max.

With the addition of the Friends reunion being one of the most anticipated TV segments in recent memory, it was clear that this iconic show would top the list as the most popular show on HBO Max and absolutely nothing will beat it on the platform.

The Flight Attendant is the only HBO Max Original in the top 10, with the cult classics like Doctor Who, The Wire, and Game of Thrones dominating the list.

It was surprising to me seeing The Big Bang Theory only just scrape into the Top 10, out of all the other series in that list I’d have expected that to be much higher up in the rankings.

Top 10 Movies on HBO Max in the First Year

HBO Max Movies

I was genuinely surprised by these particular findings as Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring tops the list of the Top 10 movies in the first year of HBO Max.

In second place was the film that I initially thought would be top as the hype for the movie was incredibly high.

Until people actually saw it and then excitement dropped quicker than one crack of Wonder Woman’s lasso.

Bare in mind Wonder Woman 1984 debuted on the platform much later than Lord of the Rings and has only been on there for 5 months, so that’s still pretty impressive regardless.

With more Warner Brothers HBO direct releases (cinematic and streaming released on the same day) titles such as Godzilla Vs Kong on that list it further reinforces that demand of at-home content on the day of cinematic release.

These findings could certainly give the studios more confidence in releasing their titles on both streaming platforms and in cinemas on the same day as both of these direct releases feature in the Top 10 list above.

It might be expected for a movie like Citizen Kane to be on the top 10 list, but interestingly, two movies from Studio Ghibli made the list in Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away.
