HBO Welcome to Derry is reportedly in the works, a prequel to Stephen King’s IT.
A story that was turned into not one but two highly successful movies the new series is rumoured to be called ‘Welcome to Derry’ and if the series is greenlit it will go into the origins of how Pennywise came to be.
This may even go back as far as the circus days and how Pennywise eventually became a demonic clown who kills children.
No announcements regarding casting have been made and whether Andrew Skarsgard will return or not as Pennywise the clown remains to be seen.
HBO do love their prequels and with Pennywise terrorising humans for hundreds of years, appearing once every 27 years there are certainly lots of angles and time periods that this story could originate from.
Horror movies seem to be making somewhat of a resurgence. Sadly it’s prequels, sequels, requels, reboots and things of that nature but as a horror fan I can’t possibly turn down another opportunity to explore the Pennywise story.
For me, IT Chapter 2 was a very weak addition compared to the first. I hated the cast line-up, for the most part, the story was weak and the scare factor was almost non-existent compared to the first movie.
The first movie had that child-like innocence that made Pennywise all that more terrifying but seeing grown adults up against Pennywise completely ruined that illusion for me and is a film I’d much rather forget in a hurry.
Seeing IT Chapter 2 in 4DX was an experience though as numerous effects contributed to an immersive experience it’s just a shame the story wasn’t there for me to invest in so it became a ‘which effect will I get next’ sort of experience rather than a nice blend between effect and story.
We’ll keep you updated with more news as soon as the HBO Welcome to Derry series is officially announced!
