Rosamund Pike I Care A Lot

I Care A Lot Review

A shady legal guardian lands in hot water when she tries to bilk a woman who has ties to a powerful gangster.

You have to hand it to writer/director J Blakeson – he made a nasty little film that stayed true to its nasty core all the through to the final scene.

After Gone Girl and now this devious thriller, Rosamund Pike has the market cornered in terms of Icy Blonde Bitch From Hell, and her effortless confidence in roles such as these is startling to say the least.

Here, she plays a morally bankrupt con-woman who bilks senior citizens out of their savings and assets by issuing surprise court orders which have been set into motion by an unscrupulous doctor who claims that the elderly person in question isn’t mentally sound to take care of their own persons.

But when Pike pulls this ruse on just about the last person you’d ever want to fuck around with (in this case, a seemingly innocent woman played by the glorious Dianne Weist), the tables are turned, and the predator instantly becomes the prey.

Then, along comes the perfectly cast Peter Dinklage as someone even more dangerous than Pike, and who has reasons to really care about Wiest, and the film gets even more deranged and hilarious as it continues.

But here’s what’s so fascinating and exciting about this movie – Blakeson never lets anyone off the hook – and never tries to make us care about or sympathize with Pike after we’ve learned that there’s an even more ruthless person running around the twisted narrative.

Every character is a degenerate piece of human scum in this flick, and Blakeson makes it enjoyable to hang out with these folks for two hours.

The music by Marc Canham is absolutely awesome and might be my favorite original score in a very long time.

And the consistently stylish cinematography and editing by Doug Emmett and Mark Eckersley respectively results in a very snappy aesthetic package.

Currently streaming on Netflix, this is a pitch-perfect and ruthless black comedy that has a mean streak a mile wide.
