Captain America: Brave New World dropped a whopping -68 % from its opening weekend and despite taking the top spot still at the box office it really doesn’t have too much in the way of competition currently.
At this moment in time the only new film that Cap is up against is Stephen King’s adaptation of The Monkey which has been mildly received by critics but Captain America: Brave New World marks one of the five steepest drops for an MCU film as they just can’t seem to shake this sharp decline in superhero movies.
Are superhero movies a genre that has been done to death? Are we now fed up?
Can we only enjoy a Deadpool movie now?
So many questions need to be asked because it’s no coincidence that they’re now all considerably underperforming at the box office with other films such as The Marvels which saw a 78% drop along with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania which saw a -70% drop and finally Brave New World ties Thor: Love and Thunder came third on that list.
The Monkey made $14.5 million which is the second largest opening for a NEON film.
But with competition like a killer monkey, Paddington in Peru and Dog Man the space was wide open for Captain America to thrive and it just isn’t turning out to be the case.
2025 has been a bad year so far for box office numbers, with only two films this year that have grossed over $50 million and whilst Captain America has surpassed the $100 million mark it’s still dropping quite substantially so recouping that staggering $180 million budget seems possible but not as easy as it really should be for an MCU film.
Movie theatres need some big draws in 2025 and looking at the calender slate I can’t quite see what’s going to light that spark to get bums on seats in their millions in cinemas again.
It’s a very strange time for cinema at the moment as streaming services have arguably the better releases this calender year but we’ll keep our fingers crossed that a surprise 2025 hit helps to catapult cinema once again.
Do you think the superhero genre is tapped out?
We weren’t huge fans of Captain America: Brave New World personally and that could also be taken into consideration, for me it didn’t really do Anthony Mackie justice in this new role and he was quite easily upstaged but not down to his own performance but from a script adamant on making him a side quest instead of the main star.
