Kate and Koji Season Finale Review

Kate and Koji Episode 6

The 6th (and last) episode of the series, we bring you our Kate and Koji season finale review.

Kate and Koji Season Finale

Not for the first time, Kate is being sued, but this time by Councillor Bone. Koji discovers he is under investigation for working illegally, and things do not improve when he tells Kate what he really thinks about her grandson.

Episode 5 of Kate and Koji finally explored the relationship between Kate and Koji, something that had been long missing from the opening episodes.

The first season took a little dip around the 4th episode but the 5th was a strong instalment that is sadly leading to this final episode.

With only 6 episodes to make an impression Kate and Koji hit the TV to a mixed audience.

This love-hate relationship with the show truly struck a divide between fans.

Many people loved its 80’s style comedy that didn’t care whatsoever about the ‘PC norms’ of today. The other half were rather put off by pre-watershed swearing and being offended by just about everything on display.

I was certainly in the ballpark of the 80’s comedy fanboy. I loved how it didn’t care what people thought and stayed true to its comedic origins.

Only the 4th episode of this series changed my opinion ever so briefly. With 6 episodes of a first season, every episode should hit home to make room for future seasons to be greenlit. Whatever ITV decide it would be nice to give Kate and Koji more episodes. That way we can all get a grasp of the future longevity of the show.

We’ve had a week of Blake Harrison here on Back to the Movies. After speaking to him for a couple of days this week and reviewing his wonderful debut short film Hooves of Clay he is certainly the star of Kate and Koji for me.

His relationship with Koji (Even in this season finale) is something the scriptwriters should explore in more detail. They have great chemistry on-screen and it’s a shame that the show only has this 30-minute window for us to relate to the characters.

Time is of the essence and at times throughout this season, things have been stretched. No relationships are explored in detail and there is no real guidance towards what the future holds up until this last episode.

Our season finale opens up with a rather hilarious video that Kate has made about Councillor Bone that lands her in hot water.

At the end of episode 5, there is a scene in a pub where Koji sticks up for Kate. It feels as thou the show was finally going to explore this relationship. Once again even in the season finale this dynamic is pushed slightly but never fully explored.

As Koji is preparing for an asylum interview he discovers he has been reported. What results is tension between Kate and Koji as it all blows up in epic fashion.

This final test of friendship is explored but with 10 minutes of the show remaining it feels all too late.

A monologue from Medium (Blake Harrison) describing their relationship with Koji falls a bit on deaf ears, unfortunately. The relationship described in that monologue is not the relationship we’ve seen develop over the last 6 episodes.

The show definitely deserves more room to explore its character dynamics and with the ending not wrapping anything up, there may just be more episodes in the pipeline to do just that.

Summary

Not the season 1 send off the show deserves but with a very open-ended finale there may just be a season 2 right around the corner.
