Lord of the Rings Amazon Prime Title Created By Hand

Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power

Instead of just doing it on a computer the team behind the Lord of the Rings Amazon Prime series did their title reveal all by hand in this astonishing footage.

Lord of the Rings Amazon Prime Title

Amazon Studios sought to announce this title on a massive scale and with a hand-crafted sensibility, cultivating a fellowship of the best artisans in the world to collaborate in setting the visual tone for what viewers can expect from the series.

Bringing together the artistry of expert foundryman and metal artist Landon Ryan, the motion capture flair of action director Klaus Obermeyer and legendary Hollywood SFX pioneer and artist Douglas Trumbull the video incorporates state-of-the-art technical methods to capturethe mesmerizing process of molten metals being cast into a mold, shot in larger-than-life detail.

Using advanced 4K camera systems, filmmakers were able to bring Tolkien’s own poetry to life.

The creative team utilized sustainably sourcedredwood to carve the original mold for the metalwork and opted to use special sand casts of the redwood to pour each letter during the filmmaking process to ensure that the heated metal would not burn through the wood.

The care and expertise involved in this process resulted in a tangible piece of art -as testament to the longevity of Tolkien’s word and appetite to continue exploring the worlds he created.

Crafting the Lettering was the title of the announcement video that showcases the beautiful footage of this delicate and precise title reveal.

Lines from Tolkien’s “Ring Verse” featured in the voiceover as part of Amazon Studios’ announcement:

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,

Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,

One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie

Approximately 900 litres of liquid nitrogen and 360 litres of argon were used to create the title reveal along with metal forging temperatures between 1750 degrees Fahrenheit on the low-end and 2100 degrees Fahrenheit on the high end.

The television series’ complete title was unveiled officially on Tuesday 18th January and the significance behind the subtitle will not be lost on J.R.R. Tolkien fans, foreshadowing an epic story that welds the major events of Tolkien’s Second Age together: the forging of the iconic rings.
