The Mortal Kombat Trailer Has Arrived! Let’s Break It Down

Mortal Kombat Trailer Breakdown

I’m a big fan of James Wan and just seeing this trailer has taken him up even higher on this pedestal I’ve put him on as the Mortal Kombat trailer has arrived and it is stunning!

Mortal Kombat 2021 Poster

Stemming from a game whos fanbase covers the entire globe and a game that fans are heavily dedicated to.

It’s safe to say the last venture into Mortal Kombat movies didn’t go so great but from the looks of this trailer, we may just have a video game movie to be proud of here.

We have martial arts, insanely gory kills that are identical to the games and the story isn’t deviating from the path and is staying true to the video game storyline.

With James Wan as a producer and director Simon McQuoid at the helm, this very film could be the start of many more to come if indeed the full feature lives up to the hype that this trailer has created.

The official synopsis reads as follows:

Mortal Kombat is a mysterious, intergalactic tournament of ancient martial arts. Shaolin Monk Liu Kang, from Earth, gets invited as a competitor.

Our new character will be introduced to this new universe as battles of superhero champions from across the globe compete to become the ultimate champion and dominion over Earth.

Here’s the Mortal Kombat trailer breakdown:

Sub-Zero Mortal Kombat

With a brief explanation of this tournament steeped in history, we go on the hunt seven years prior of a fugitive who turns out to have superhuman powers. That fugitive in question is Sub-Zero.

The two characters hunting him down are Sonya and Jak but when Jak encounters Sub-Zero, he only goes and freezes his arms and tears them off!

Straying from character backstories in Jak’s case and going in a new direction but Sub-Zero is now immediately the villain in this trailer.

We then go into a quick background on Cole.

Cole is an MMA fighter from earth who has a dragon-shaped birthmark.

Sonya and Jak tell Cole that Sub-Zero also had the same mark on his body and rather than a birthmark it’s an invite to a tournament known as Mortal Kombat.

Training begins.

Whilst this is happening we get a backstory of the tournament itself with Sonya’s narration and it fits in nicely with the same story the video games portrayed.

This time old tradition where warriors from Earth and Outworld would battle.

At this point, I’m curious as to how a few MMA movies will be useful against guy who can shoot fire and ice from their bodies but I digress.

We’re then introduced to Scorpion who brutally lays waste to a group of assassins, it’s brutal from start to finish and absolutely awesome mimicking the famous video game movies to a tee.

Scorpion Mortal Kombat Movie

Goro also makes a return, one of the main bosses of the original arcade game. We quickly seem him launching towards some very unfortunate opponent.

We also see Scorpion and Sub-Zero fight before the infamous Mortal Kombat music plays and Shang Tsung appears to demand fatalities from the challengers as a kill montage of epic proportions begins.

I mean, as far as trailers go, it revealed absolutely nothing in the way of spoilers.

We got our backstory, we were introduced to our characters and we got a taster of the bloodshed to come.

I can’t wait!
