Mother F**king Hilarious: Shaft (2019) Movie Review

shaft 2019 movie review

We review Shaft as Tim Story explores three generations of Shafts in this latest hilarious 2019 instalment.

Not taking anything too seriously Shaft seems to toy with letting Samuel L. Jackson go on a free comedic reign to fully express himself in every delivery of the word ‘mother f**ker’.

It’s hilarious to me that no matter how many times I hear him say it throughout this movie it makes me chuckle every single time.

This lighthearted comedy was a total surprise to me and one I really enjoyed.

JJ (Jessie T. Usher) son of John Shaft II (Samuel L. Jackson) is living the life of an FBI data analyst who’s childhood friend winds up dead under suspicious circumstances.

With the help of his estranged father go on the hunt to find out what really happened and the outstanding relationship between the two begins.

John Shaft II (Jackson) is now a single bachelor living the life of loose women, booze and operating under his own set of rules.

His son, on the other hand, is the tie wearing, rule-following upstanding member of society.

Two worlds collide and this film delivers laugh after laugh from start to finish.

What really stands out about this instalment is how the movie perfectly captures the magic of the original 1971 and the 2000 reboot.

The franchise is carefully and appropriately honoured and Tim Story has delivered a truly wonderful buddy-cop action comedy here.

Exploring three generations also gave the story makers time to explore the change of times from a social standpoint.

Whilst the action sequences are somewhat lacking it’s the social dynamics and comedic elements that make this film worth the watch.

Regina Hall and Alexandra Shipp put in a good shift as supporting cast members. The feisty females that try to keep the guys in check.

It’s also cool to see that father and son dynamic come to life on screen despite the canyon-size differences between them.

John Shaft II with the old-school no f**ks given attitude and JJ the modern post-millennial nerdy style FBI analyst.

This cross-generation comedy is the heart and soul of this feature.

Overall

Shaft is funny and in keeping with the times, we live in today.

A modern twist that pays the original and the reboot the respect it deserves.

Samuel L Jackson at his mother f**king best!
