Camp Horror Mystic Museum

The Mystic Museum: A Thrilling and Terrifying Destination for Horror Fans and Lovers of the Occult. Come and join us as we step inside the Mystic Museum in California.

90s Slashers Mystic Museum

The Mystic Museum in Burbank, California first came up on my radar after a Google search of ‘Horror Museums’ and stuck in my rut of mundane UK attractions I instantly gravitated towards browsing the American roadside attractions and museums and low and behold, Mystic Museum stood there shining brightly with all its gory goodness.

Haunted Dolls MYSTIC MUSEUM

Beautifully designed and forever changing The Mystic Museum is a very exciting destination for horror nerds around the world. From the occult to the paranormal, the mystical and more the exploration of horror in this attraction is a beautiful thing and the love for the genre oozes out of every nook and cranny of this charmingly dark and inviting property.

Bearded Lady

The Mystic Museum are primarily a store– featuring a selection of goth fashion, dark home decor, and literature on the mystical– but also a rotating exhibit space– displaying a collection of real horror movie props; memorabilia; photo opportunities; and intricately designed sets, which are often recreations of scenes in movies like Evil Dead, Candyman, Scream, Silence of the Lambs, and Alien.

Slashers Exhibit

Only recently did the attraction have a 90s Slashers Exhibit where guests would walk around full-size sets equipped with a plastic knife that when stabbed into certain displays would activate numerous interactive elements of the attraction.

The 90s Slashers Exhibit closed officially last weekend but the attraction is working around the clock on building its next attraction already. That’s what keeps Mystic Museum fresh, the constant turnaround of exhibitions that are unique and wonderfully crafted.

The attraction is just a hive of photo opportunities so get your cameras ready as your Instagram wall is going to be filling up fast!

90s Slashers MYSTIC MUSEUM

One particular set that blew me away is their Slashback Video pop-up store that went back to the days of retro 80s video stores. It reminds me very much of the Trailers scare maze at Thorpe Park and the brand new for 2022 maze Doom Town at Tulleys Shocktoberfest which included a retro throwback to the old Blockbuster video stores.

Considering it’s just a pop-up you don’t expect the level of detail to be so high but The Mystic Museum doesn’t seem to know when to stop. They’ll just keep going and improving and stepping up the levels of immersion until your brain can’t physically handle all of his horror goodness.

Slashback Video

With an 80s flair, it’s a stunning little throwback and instantly gives me Stranger Things vibes.

It just has to be seen to be believed but if that’s not available when you visit then fear not! The main store is divided into three distinct sections, each with its own unique personality. MYSTIC MUSEUM ODDITIES– the central portion– is a treasure trove of oddities and curiosities that will delight and inspire anyone with a love for taxidermy, Victorian-era mourning jewellery, the human anatomy, and antiques. CAMP HORROR is a homage to 80s Slasher and Horror movies, and a nostalgic nod to the golden era of horror cinema.

But the exhibits are the attractions’ main focus outside of the store, it’s what draws the crowds in so let me tell you about their new upcoming event and that is The Lost Toys.

The Lost Toys MYSTIC MUSEUM

The Lost Toys is currently on display at our second location, just three blocks away from their main store in Burbank. The exhibition explores what it would feel like to visit a toy store from the past. You’ll be transported back in time to the Atomic era, all the way to the 1990s. You’ll step right into a few custom-curated photo ops including a fully recreated child’s bedroom from the 1980s.

Their rotating themed art shows, unique interactive exhibits, custom photo ops, and meticulously designed retail spaces offer something for everyone, whether you are a fan of the occult, horror, or film in general.

80s Bedroom Mystic Museum

The Mystic Museum in California is one hell of an attraction and their attention to detail and budget for these pop-ups must be on a much bigger scale than anyone gives them credit for. So much detail, so much immersion, so much goddamn fun and we’d love nothing more than to visit one day!
