Odeon Christmas Releases will consist of a wide range of classics this December in select cinemas. From ET to Love Actually, visiting Odeon will be worth the wait after months of Lockdown.
These selections bring a sense of specialty as they are rarely shown today.
The selection dates back from It’s a Wonderful Life in 1946 to Back to the Future and Die Hard. In this article, I will run through some of the iconic releases this December.
Die Hard
Yes, Die Hard will be showing this December.
Everything good about this classic has been said already. It kickstarted Bruce Willis’s career and changed the action genre forever.
The film follows John Mcclane who visits his estranged wife, only to find out the building is being taken over by terrorists. He finds himself being the only one who can save the day.
A perfect combination of tension and action, coupled with terrific performances by Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman who plays the villain, Hans Gruber.
This is a quintessential classic for lovers of the action genre.
This film would be the start of 4 more installments; however, the original being a Christmas film, is the finest of them all.
Titanic
James Cameron’s spectacular Titanic is a fine addition to some of the re-releases this month.
From a film making perspective, this film is meant to be seen on the big screen with James Horner’s soundtrack.
There is both a magnificent awe and tragedy element to the last 1 hour of the film, where see the ship sink.
It is handled expertly by James Cameron and the production crew. The film was released in 1997 and it still holds up today, which is so impressive.
The film would later gross over 2 billion on its initial release date.
Science Fiction
As well as action films, Odeon will be showing some science fiction classics. Starting off the bizarre but intelligent Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The 1990’s was the prime decade for Arnold Schwarzenegger films. This decade also included Terminator 2: Judgement Day and True Lies. However, Total Recall is an explosive action film with a very unpredictable narrative, which is a rare element to several released films of nowadays.
Arnold has some comedic one liner’s and the humor works well alongside the thrilling actions set pieces. The film would later be remade in 2012 starring Collin Farrell, but the original is the far superior version.
Followed by this, Steven Spielberg’s classic ET will be showing. This is more of a family friendly science fiction film that will appeal to all audiences.
In contrast to this, The Thing and Back to the Future will be making a needed comeback this December. John Carpenters The Thing is a classic 80’s horror film that showcased audiences a brilliant and terrifying use of practical effects and one of Kurt Russell’s best performances, whereas Back to the Future is one of the most timeless films ever made.
Like ET, it has an appeal for all audiences and an unpredictable narrative that moves at the speed of lightning.
The film would also score a near perfect 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Other Odeon Christmas Releases
Like I stated in the intro, we have a wide range of films from different genres including science fiction and action but there is a selection of feel-good films.
These films include the underrated film The Holiday starring Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black and Kate Winslet. Alongside this, we have another Steven Spielberg film The Polar Express which packs the Christmas spirit.
Other Christmas classics include Home Alone and its sequel as well as Will Ferrell’s Elf, The Grinch and the Nightmare Before Christmas. The ensemble piece Love Actually is another addition, which includes the cast, Hugh Grant, Kiera Knightley, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth and Emma Thompson.
The film is known to be one of Richard Curtis finest works. There are several other releases, most notably The Godfather Part 3 and Mean Girls. The Godfather part 3 has recently been named to The Godfather Coda which was the final entry of the 3-part trilogy, with Al Pacino starring in each installment.
To conclude, this December there is something for all audiences, whether you want to enroll on the wacky rides of Back to the Future and Total Recall or aboard the ship on Titanic.
The cinematic selection provides a bit of everything for each age generation from the 80’s,90’s and 2000’s.
When restrictions lift, visiting the cinema may bring high reward this December.
