Nicolas Cage is back in the B-Movie bucket with this latest movie Primal.
Brace yourselves thou, it’s certainly better than his previous indie flicks!
When a Nicolas Cage does an indie film nowadays, we look away. Most of them are complete trash although I was mildly surprised with 211.
His latest upcoming film to get a UK DVD release is Primal. A Steven Seagal Under Siege type movie where Cage plays a wild animal dealer who’s transporting his animals (including a rare white jaguar) on a ship that just so happens to be transporting a skilled assassin.
Now whilst the jaguar in question is a CGI disaster we thankfully don’t get to see much of it throughout.
The film as a whole actually looks big budget but is heavily restricted by a really lazy script (like The Rise of Skywalker lazy).
The characters are awful and there are action movie clichés aplenty. Primal is a two-man movie and those two men are Nicolas Cage and Kevin Durand.
Durand plays the role of the assassin and my god does he steal the show. Delivering an absolutely phenomenal performance that takes the level of acting from indie to blockbuster within seconds of being on screen.
His character is cold, chilling and merciless.
Durand seems to know the script isn’t all that great and plays the character with some humor that oozes an arrogant swagger.
The lazy script actually helps to build Durand’s character into one hell of a badass.
With a couple of twists here and there Primal isn’t all that bad. It’s a bit crazy, frenzied and a bit farfetched but it’s all good fun.
With great set pieces and enough momentum to keep you hooked Primal is certainly for me one of Cage’s better independent films.

Summary
A feisty and ferocious movie that certainly is one of Cage’s better independent flicks but it’s Kevin Durand’s performance that steals the show as he transcends the screen and delivers a blockbuster performance!
