RED Review: A Rocky Inspired Christmas Short Film

RED Christmas Short Film

RED short film tells a unique Christmas story this holiday as Rudolph (aka RED) channels his inner Rocky in this buoyant Christmas short.

‘RED’ is the horny tale of Rudolph as you’ve never seen him before.
Once a legend, hero, and leader of the pack, he now lives alone in a trailer on the outskirts of the North Pole.

RED Christmas Short film

After watching a documentary charting his fall from grace, a fired up Red decides to make the ultimate comeback and reclaim his spot as the King of Deers. Cue a ‘Rocky’ style montage. We witness the sheer power and determination of the world’s most famous reindeer.

In a film bursting with testosterone, carrot smoothies, and 80’s inspired hoof-wear. Get ready for a hairy ride!

Fresh out of jail RED has been on a downward spiral. In this short RED watches a news story about his demise and says to himself it’s time for change. He stubs out his cigarette. Places his whiskey on the side table and embarks on an intense training regime to get back in shape.

With cheesy 80’s music and an 80’s vibe throughout RED serves as a showreel for this incredible animation company. Ritzy Animation have created such vibrant textures within this short film, i’ve seen big budget independent animations that don’t contain as much detail as this short. Such quality work from such a small team.

Reindeer puns a plenty the short also serves as a spot the easter egg game to see just how many reindeer references you can cram into a short runtime.

Overall

RED short film

A spin on the classic Rudolph tale I thought RED was a short yet exciting little feature. I especially loved him taking selfies of himself in the bathroom in true ‘gym bod’ instagram fitness guru style.

Ritzy Animation has set a benchmark here for smaller animation studios. This really is an impressive of talent and I look forward to seeing more from these UK artists.
