Compare Road House to the 1989 original starring Patrick Swayze and you may as well stop reading this Road House Amazon Prime review. While it doesn’t compare to the original, the 2024 Jake Gyllenhaal version is cheesy good fun!
UFC-fighter turned bouncer Elwood Dalton (Gyllenhaal) takes up a job in Key West Florida but every frame of Road House plays out like a tongue-in-cheek action movie. A cross between John Wick and Looney Tunes in equal measure.
Whilst the core vitals of the original faintly beat within this remake this one feels more fun whilst at the same time there’s a level of seriousness that balances the character out (to a degree).
The hilarious calmness of Dalton as he calmly explains just how he’s going to disarm his attacker before he does it is quite hilarious and really shows a powerplay of confidence and badassery.
Conor McGregor is no actor but rather plays a rather embellished version of himself in Road House and even an intro cameo from Post Malone makes Road House seem very cartoonish and gives off unusual vibes the second they appear on screen.
It all feels out of place for one minute yet it all comes together in quite hilarious ways.
What fell by the wayside in Road House is the character building, we start with a nice build-up of side characters that are primed and ready to compliment the storyline and then just mysteriously disappear.
Action and silliness take centre stage and some weird CGI choices make Road House a tough watch at times but it’s a fun watch and nothing can take that away from the film.
It’s a shame that the main selling point of a film like this is computer generated, quite a shame really and that’s what drags the film down many levels.
There are plenty of films out there choreographed to fight sequence perfection but sadly Road House isn’t one of them. Kick back, relax, grab a beer and some nachos and enjoy this cheesy good fun time on Amazon Prime.
