Stale In Places But Mostly Hilarious. Daddy’s Home 2 Review

Daddy's Home 2 Review

Unlike the sea of critics out there forever comparing movies to current worldly issues, views, opinions and all that other rubbish. It’s with great pleasure that I’m still able to go to a film and enjoy it for what it is. A movie.

Thankfully it’s not something I look too deep into when going into a screening and people’s bias sensitivities to just about anything they see on screen nowadays is probably another reason why the world is going to shit. Just saying.

Whilst to some extent I agree with being sensitive to certain topics that are extremely serious in the world today, it’s the trivial topics that always seem to draw the most complaints and that ladies and gentleman is just annoying.

But with that said, no overly sensitive person’s opinion is going to stop me from going to my local cinema and enjoying a comedy movie and enjoy it I did!

Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) and Brad (Will Ferrell) have grown as characters since the hilarious first instalment. Now getting along with one another despite harbouring some underlying anger and issues with one-another.

Their co-dad skills are strong and their friendship is even stronger. Everything seems to be going so well until their dads arrive over the Christmas holidays. Dusty’s dad is played by Mel Gibson and Brad’s is played by the loveable John Lithgow.

Chaos ensues and the strain between Dusty’s and Brad’s co-dad situation becomes heavily strained with hilarious consequences.

Daddy's Home 2 Review

Overall I enjoyed Daddy’s Home 2 but it was far from perfect. The movie repeated a lot of gags from the first instalment which I thought was a bit of a letdown but the film’s comedy hit harder for me in other areas. Mel Gibson’s hard-ass attitude and demeanour was always hilarious to witness as he now feels his son has turned into quite the pushover compared to the bad ass he once was.

So whilst bits do get repeated in terms of the larger scale comedic moments it’s the dialogue and the running jokes that stand out as some of the movies stronger points. It has the comedic moments but they do get a little few and far between and at times the film does start feeling stale. But the second you think it’s going too quiet, something happens and you’re back to wiping the joyous tears of laughter from your eyes.

A scene very close to the end of the movie (in a cinema no less) had the entire audience I was watching the film with crying their eyes out. It’s a classic Will Ferrell moment that gave me insane flashbacks to a similar scene from Step Brothers.

Daddy’s Home 2 never steps into the spotlight of a Christmas movie. The time of year in the film just happens to be a coincidence that is never really dwelled upon too deeply and the usual Christmas family vacation plot is in full flow here.

The film never feels overly Christmassy. It just feels coincidental and I liked that, nothing felt overly forced for a film that has been released specifically for the holiday season.

Daddy's Home 2 Review

I felt the chemistry between John Lithgow and Mel Gibson (the two granddads) to be another saving grace of this movie. They riff off one another incredibly well and the end of the film does leave me with an idea that they should do an independent spin-off together. Grandaddy’s Home anyone?

So forget the naysayers and the reviews. Go to see Daddy’s Home 2 and make your own mind up!

Summary

Stale in places but overall a typical Will Ferrell film. Sloppy in places but with odd moments of brilliance and hilarious scenes. It’s certainly not a film that will be winning any awards anytime soon but I certainly enjoyed it and everyone else around me did too!
