Two archeologists make an amazing discovery that has the power to unite the World during a critical moment in history – if they’re not silenced first.
We finally got to see Star Wars: Origins this weekend and it was worth the wait. Thanks to Director Phil Hawkins for an early sneak preview of this incredible short film before it’s appearance at For the Love of Sci Fi.
Star Wars: Origins Review
When you think of fan films you thing of shoe-string budget projects put together by students. Star Wars: Origins takes my preconceived notions and blows them to another galaxy. Whilst watching The Mandalorian recently it’s clear to see such a huge budget put to good use. Star Wars: Origins is a short film and doesn’t look a spec out of place in comparison.
The storyline is simple, two archeologists find a cave of treasure containing relics from the Star Wars universe. They’re being hunted down by two sets of enemies including the Nazis. This Star Wars movie has something else entirely in-store. This Star Wars short-film is also linked to Indiana Jones. Walter and Ellie the two explorers not only find a holy grail in this particular temple but other Star Wars universe artifacts.
The tonality of the movie with its vibrant colors and bright sweeping desert shots is shot just like Indiana Jones. Chase sequences involving jeeps, tanks and nazi’s are all Indiana Jones inspired. Walters hat is a carbon copy of Indy’s and there are more little easter eggs for you if you look hard enough too. Whilst the film cinematically is shot like Indiana Jones the musical score is Star Wars. The film pays tribute to the universe as thou it was a world left behind many, many years ago. Almost in caveman fashion. Rey and BB8 even make an appearance! We must have leaped many many years into the future.
Overall
Questionable timelines aside Star Wars: Origins are just fandom wrapped in a bundle. Sprinkled with George Lucas magic (see if you can spot the wink and nod to the man himself) and Spielberg charm. Watching recent movies like Invasion Planet Earth destroy all hope of good looking CGI on a budget, Star Wars: Origins has once again restored it. I can’t post the scenes without spoiling them but as soon as you see them, you’ll know.
Director Phil Hawkins has set the marker for his future projects, this is quite the work of art!
