The Art of Self Defense Review
The Art of Self Defense is easily the funniest, most surprising, most unpredictable film I’ve seen in 2019.
Totally diseased and evil on a thematic level, and containing the best WOW moment of the year so far.
I could never anticipate where this movie was headed and the wild final act stings with killer inevitability and hostile intent.
Written and directed by Riley Stearns. This is over the top yet still relatable material performed at a precise, dead-pan comic pitch by some seriously talented actors.
With expert shooting and cutting and an ominous musical score that heightens tension in a very clever manner.
Jesse Eisenberg, playing an emasculated office drone who suffers a brutal, random attack one night on his way home from buying food for his dog, strikes up a unique relationship with an enigmatic karate Sensei, played by a menacing and hilarious Alessandro Nivola, who has some very unique ideas on what it takes to be a man in today’s society.
Eisenberg hasn’t been this perfectly matched with material since The Social Network. Nivola is a scary revelation, and Imogen Poots had a lot of fun with an important supporting role.

Summary
What I loved so much about The Art of Self Defense is that it NEVER backs down from its central premise, and the tonal balance between black comedy and violent thriller is maintained like a high-wire act, all the way until the closing seconds. Available on Blu-ray/DVD and via various streaming providers – this is dangerous fun that’s just waiting to find an adoring cult audience.
