The Gentlemen Review: A Nice Return to Form For Guy Ritchie

The Gentleman

Mickey Pearson is an American expatriate who became rich by building a marijuana empire in London.

When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business, it soon triggers an array of plots and schemes from those who want his fortune.

The Gentleman Review 1

Over the years it’s safe to say I haven’t really been a fan of anything that Guy Ritchie has delivered to the table since the early 2000s.

There’s just something about his movies that don’t connect with me in any way shape or form and they’re all so similar in style and delivery when it comes to his British gangster flicks.

In steps The Gentlemento wipe my assumption from existence.

Starring an incredible cast line-up including Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam and Colin Farrell you wouldn’t expect this movie to go wrong and for large portions of the film it doesn’t.

Absolutely outstanding performances from all those involved.

The Gentleman Cast

When seeing the trailer I was laughing at the thought of Hugh Grant playing a gangster type. Thankfully the film introduces him as a rather campy and snakey individual who is pitching a movie script and as he tells it, our film begins.

There are plenty of humorous moments throughout this gangster flick, just when you think it’s a run of the mill Guy Ritchie flick there’s a little twist and turn and a bit of humor injected into much needed moments.

I’m surprised anyone gave Ritchie a chance after releasing King Arthur (and Aladdin wasn’t all that great either) but I’m ever so glad they did.

There isn’t one performance I could single out they were all superb.

This stylish film bounces between a pub, a few posh mansions, and a drug den as it weaves its glorious web. The plot is outlandish but well worth a watch!

Summary

Outlandish and crazy yet slick and stylish with an eerie British charm. Guy Ritchie has been a little off the mark in his previous films but The Gentleman finally sees a solid return to form
