The Grudge (2020) Review: Pointless and Poor

grudge 2020 review

After being blown away by last January’s horror release Escape Room I was looking forward to The Grudge review.

The Grudge's New Red Band Trailer

It’s nice to see The Grudge getting the same January release treatment. Usually, this time of year is saved for Oscar-nominated movies so it’s nice to actually have some alternatives to watch this month!

The Grudge 2020 Review

Combing somewhat of a sequel and a reboot to the 2004 installment we have this rather unusual horror tale. Our story revolves around a Detective (Andrea Riseborough) who is investigating a mutilated corpse found inside a car in the middle of the forest. She is warned not to investigate by her suspicious partner but she carries on regardless and uncovers a sinister truth.

Throughout the film, we keep bouncing back with flashbacks to fates of previous victims of this mysterious character. Here we see John Cho, Betty Gilpin and Lin Shaye for brief inclusions before we go back to the dull lethargic plot.

The trailer sadly was scarier than the film itself. Heavily relying on jump scares to class it as a horror movie.

The film focuses on too many characters for us to care about. Whilst the special effects are incredible (saving grace of the movie) it falls horribly short of being anything remotely scary.

Certainly more of a jumpy flick than one of substance so prepare those nerves!

If you want a tame horror movie to kickstart your 2020 horror movie slate then this is it. If you scare easy (like myself) then you’ll enjoy the popcorn flying all over your lap.

Summary

Such an extensive cast was severely wasted in this mess of a movie. A slow and rather dull movie that all feels a bit pointless and ultimately wasted.
