The LEGO Movie 2 Movie Maker Set Review

LEGO Movie 2 Movie Maker Review

LEGO Movie 2

Your dreams of being a film director can now become a reality with the brand new LEGO Movie 2 Movie Maker set.

Simply attach a phone camera to the custom-built lego camera stand, build your set and props and record your very own Lego movie with the movie maker app.

The set comes with 3 special camera angle points that allow different camera panning movements and the set frame features sliding and adjustable arms to animate props and characters.

The LEGO Movie 2 Movie Maker Set – The Build

The box contains a huge manual and three separate bags. The first bag contains all the parts needed to build the set and attach the backdrop.

The second bag contains parts to build your main characters and their own props and the third bag is additional characters and two flying ships to attach to the set.

Three hours later the whole build was complete which is quite some considerable time. Bare in mind I’m a LEGO novice but even so, this set is built for ages 8 and up to an adult will need to be on standby for you to get it done in a reasonable amount of time.

Some instructions in the booklet are slightly unclear and nowhere in the booklet does it tell you how to use the app but more on that later. But as a whole, it wasn’t too difficult to complete just long and laborious.

It was cool to see the set coming together and I was getting distracted taking a few on-set ‘production’ photos along the way. With every click of every brick, I was rolling back the years and returning to my youth.

The LEGO Movie 2 Movie Maker Set – The App

A simple click onto the app store and the free LEGO Movie Maker app will be downloaded onto your phone instantly. Whilst the app is still fairly new you can add a handful of sound and visual effects to your footage.

This app is fairly easy to use but for those of you who want a more professional editing suite. Think again. This is bare bones editing where you’re unable to trim clips. You’re limited to shooting clips and deleting them. That’s just about it.

A simple drag and drop interface allows you to add sound and special effects at certain points of your video and then you can upload them to your LEGO account.

What I didn’t like about the app is the fact that my videos couldn’t upload anywhere for some reason. Instead, I had to screen-capture the phone screen just to get a recording of my film as the app doesn’t let you save the videos to your device.

Even then I had to throw the footage into iMovie just to make sure it edited slightly better.

The app is in desperate need of an update with some additional improvements added to make it all the more easier to create content but for a kids app, it’s ok.

The LEGO Movie 2 Movie Maker Set – Overall

LEGO Movie 2

For all the young budding filmmakers out there this is a perfect starter kit to create some LEGO movie magic.

It’s affordable, it’s easy to build and easy to start generating content (when the app decides to upload correctly).

I created a video below to show you the type of film that can be shot using the Movie Maker set.

I’m no Spielberg but it’ll give you an idea of what to expect. I added a few extra bits of music and sound effects in myself as I felt the effects within app were rather limited.

Enjoy!
