The Ricky Gervais Golden Globes Speech We All Needed

Ricky Gervais Golden Globes 2020

In a January of negative discussion of World War 3 and the horrible events happening in Australia it was a breath of fresh-air to actually smile in 2020. Those smiles came in the form of Ricky Gervais absolutely laying waste to the Hollywood elite and delivering one of the most memorable Golden Globes opening monologues of all time.

From the second he walked onto the stage Ricky was taking no prisoners. Joke after joke came and delivered. I’m surprised the Golden Globes didn’t hand out their own ice patches to soothe the burns. From Greta Thunberg to pedophiles and acceptance speeches Ricky delivered this gloves off performance. The jokes instantly reminded me of Dave Chappelle’s Netflix standup. Jokes that direct hit as they speed through the snowflakes in our society and out the other side.

Pint in hand, Ricky was on a roll. Coming out on stage he instantly reminded us all that “they’re just jokes, we’re all going to die soon, and theres no sequel.

2020 started off with some awful events but its nice to just for one second have a laugh and ease the pressure. Thank you Ricky Gervais for delivering the speech we all needed and the laugh we all deserved.

Here are a few of his best lines from the Ricky Gervais Golden Globes Speech:

  • “Martin Scorsese said the Marvel films remind him of theme parks. I don’t know what he’s doing hanging around theme parks – he’s not big enough to go on the rides.”
  • “Knives Out has three nominations tonight. See what can happen when you don’t dress people up as Cats?”
  • “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was nearly three hours long. Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere, and by the end his date was too old for him.”
  • “Kevin Hart was fired from the Oscars for some offensive tweets. Luckily for me, the Hollywood Foreign Press can barely speak English and they’ve no idea what Twitter is, so I got offered this gig by fax.”
