The Witches HBO Max Release Scheduled For This Halloween

The Witches HBO Max release has replaced the originally intended theatrical release.

The Witches HBO Max

Robert Zemeckis and Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches is going straight to HBO MAX completely replacing a theatrical release.

The film’s release date has been moved all over the place lately due to uncertainty within the market but a few days ago Deadline reported that the platform will be exclusively hosting the content on October 22nd.

A further nail added into the cinema chain coffin during 2020, it’s hard to see any movie studio taking a risk on cinema chains for a ridiculously long time.

After the success of VOD films such as Trolls: World Tour and the most recent Scooby-Doo animation.

Compared to the mediocre reception of Tenet VOD seems like the safest bet at this current moment in time.

The original synopsis for the 1990’s version of The Witches was as follows:

“Jasen Fisher plays Luke, the 9-year-old boy who must foil the plans of a society of witches to turn the world’s children into mice.

It won’t be easy: They’ve already transformed him into one! But some big, bad witches may be no match for the resourcefulness of a single tiny rodent.”

The film stars Oscar winners Anne Hathaway (“Les Misérable,” “Ocean’s 8”) and Octavia Spencer (“The Help,” “The Shape of Water”), and Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci (“The Hunger Games” films, “The Lovely Bones”), with Kristin Chenoweth (TV’s “Glee” and “BoJack Horseman”) and award-winning comedy legend Chris Rock.

Jahzir Kadeem Bruno (TV’s “Atlanta”) also stars, alongside Codie-Lei Eastick (“Holmes & Watson”).

A brand new trailer appeared online yesterday from Warner Bros and you can check it out below:

Taking place in Alabama in 1967 the story revolves around a young orphan who is sent to live with his grandmother (played by Octavia Spencer).

The two end up crossing paths with the Grand High Witch and her coven.

With Del Toro and Robert Zemeckis at the helm, this is certainly a film I’m looking forward to seeing regardless of what platform it debuts on.
