What On Earth Was That? US Review

us movie review

Jordan Peele’s highly anticipated film US has now released and myself and every single person in the audience came out of the theatre going “What the hell just happened?!”

Us centers on a family who one fateful night are confronted by their doppelgangers who are out to kill them.

As it would happen they’re not the only family being hunted down by their animalistic clones in this home invasion thriller/on-going drab of political and social commentary.

Whilst the acting is sublime with a special note going to Lupita Nyong’o who puts in a stellar performance as Adelaide Wilson and her doppelganger named ‘Red’ sadly nothing else can save this rather unusual spectacle.

If the movie had kept to a rather simple notion that the doppelgangers are the evil within all of us then the film would have been much more relatable and enjoying but sadly the film drags us on some self-reflection of modern times and all the other garbage we are fed on a day to day basis via news broadcasters.

Jordan Peele introduces us to a rather entertaining first 45-minutes where the film follows its horror roots with beautiful panning cinematography, tense score, and real palpable atmosphere.

The second those 45-minutes have elapsed the film ditches the horror genre and becomes some incoherent mess that can’t seem to decide what the hell it’s doing or where the hell it’s going.

A predictable final act twist doesn’t make up for any of the forced political agenda’s we’ve had to suffer with and every ‘scary’ moment was openly laughed at in the particular theatre I was watching it in. You’re wondering what the hell is going on as the film loses it’s way completely and borderlines ridiculous.

Critics are labeling US as the ‘Best Movie Of Our Generation’ and ‘The Best Horror of All Time’. It’s funny how critics hop on board the bandwagon like sheep to the slaughter when it comes to a film that the general public (for the most part) doesn’t really quite understand.

Opinion is split on this movie but classing it as a horror first and foremost is hilarious. Whilst the story is simple enough to follow the deeper plot becomes too complicated to the point where I was debating whether to walk out of the auditorium. Something I have NEVER done in my life.

Get Out was groundbreaking and whether I’m too dumb to understand it I can honestly say this one was just shit.

Summary

Sadly a great opening 45 minutes can’t save this agenda-pushing plot hole ridden overhyped spectacle
