Thirty four years since the original Top Gun movie. A lot has changed since then, so we ask ourselves
Why Is Now The Right Time for Top Gun: Maverick?
You may be asking yourself why make a Top Gun Sequel? Why now? What’s the point?
Sequel talk has been in the pipeline for many years now and finally we have a film on the way come June 26th. Fans went absolutely nuts for the incredible trailer and knowing how the movie was shot is even more enticing.
Tom Cruise never shies away from a stunt. The cast are in real jets, doing real stunts, nothing is faked. They’re going all out to deliver the most immersive and realistic silver screen experience possible. They even needed permission from the navy to perform one particular stunt!
The movie has been made for a new generation and with fans dying for another instalment it made sense that 2020 was the year it happened. They wanted to let a whole generation past so that Maverick could team up with the son of his best friend and co-pilot Goose.
Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller) has adopted his father’s call-sign. He will be one of the main characters of the movie. Director Joseph Kosinski told Entertainment Weekly that he’s the driving force of the movie:
“The relationship between Maverick and Rooster really forms the emotional core and spine of the film. It was really one the key reasons Tom felt like that now this is the time to go back and do this.”
Whilst Miles Teller for me looks like more of a Maverick than a Goose in terms of personality (arrogance) the production thought Miles the best choice. Glen Powell was also in the running to play Goose’s son too.
Synopsis
After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.
Top Gun: Maverick will follow the class of 2020. The new recruits of Top Gun, recently graduated and coming back for a special training detachment.
Val Kilmer is back in the role of Iceman. It’ll be interesting to see if his persona has melted somewhat and even warmed to that of Maverick’s after the opening movies tension between the two.
Come June, we’ll have all the answers to our burning questions. Top Gun: Maverick is a movie that needs to be seen on the big screen. The bigger the better. I’m certainly thinking of watching this one in IMAX. A sentence I rarely say.
The sheer scale of the movie mixed with the insane audio of those jet engines flying over head, that iconic soundtrack. Bring it on!
