Ahead of its March 1st release, the SPACEMAN Adam Sandler Netflix trailer has dropped today as Sandler steps into another serious role which he nails every single time!
Based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, Adam plays the character Jakub, an astronaut adrift in the cosmos.
The film sees Sandler step into his serious shoes much like his roles in Hustle and Uncut Gems which are two extraordinary movies that really show off Adam’s diverse and incredible ability to switch off the comedy and get his game face on.
Having this serious side to Adam’s performance was paramount for director Johan Renck who told Netflix:
I wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know. I don’t think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he’s very intelligent, really smart, profound.
What is Spaceman About?
Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth.
For the majority of the film Sandler is alone on a spacecraft so his acting chops are put to the test in every scene but he won’t be alone for the entire duration as a giant spider-like alien known as Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) will appear alongside him during his final leg of his interstellar mission.
Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by this mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship.
The film also stars Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini.
Spaceman will have its world premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival before arriving on Netflix on March 1, 2024.
Adam Sandler In Serious Roles
Widely recognised for his comedic prowess Adam Sandler has managed to surprise audiences with his versatility in recent times further proving he’s a multifaceted actor capable of delivering powerful performances and I can’t imagine Spaceman being any different.
The Spaceman trailer alone already gives you a solid indication of the tone of the film as Sandler is stuck in space for 6 months whilst his wife is back home pregnant with his child.
Is it the delirium of being trapped in space alone that is manifesting this spider-like creature to help him or is this a genuine alien from a faraway planet who is keeping him company much like a spirit guide?
Dealing with the emotions and loneliness of space this creature is guiding his thoughts and helping him towards the eventuality of him and his wife meeting face to face once again.
One of the standout examples of Sandler’s departure from his comedic comfort zone is his role in the 2019 crime thriller “Uncut Gems.” Directed by the Safdie brothers, the film sees Sandler in the lead role of Howard Ratner, a New York City jeweller with a gambling addiction.
Easily one of my favourite Adam Sandler movies as this complex character is beautifully portrayed and the film was a hit with the critics as this dark and more intense role was a far cry from the likes of Billy Maddison and Happy Gilmore.
Films that showed the world that he isn’t confined to a specific genre. Don’t get me wrong, we all love a Hubie’s Halloween now and again but to show the world you’re more than what people think, that must be quite some feeling.
By taking on diverse and challenging roles, he has proven that his talent extends beyond making audiences laugh, showcasing a depth and range that many may not have expected.
