Chiswick Auctions are set to sell two iconic chairs used in Stanley Kubrick’s A Space Odyssey.
You can own a piece of sci-fi history for a very reasonable amount indeed.
Chairs From A Spacey Odyssey FOR SALE
Designed by Oliver Mourgue in 1965 these beautiful Djinn chairs ooze a 60’s futuristic design.
It’s clear to see why Kubrick chose this particular design and the film immortalized them in film furniture history.
The chairs were already designed before the movie was created by Kubrick and his team chose these to be included in the film.
One scene where Dr. Floyd walks through the Hilton lobby of Space Station Five on his way to the moon, you can see the chairs in all of their funky fluorescent glory.
Work To Be Done

Kubrik’s art and props department for the film invited commercial product manufacturers and designers all to submit designs.
The also asked outstanding interior and furniture designers of the time, to create projected versions of how their products they might look decades later in the year 2001.
As part of the deal, Kubrick agreed to show the approved designs in the movie.
The film, therefore, remains not only as an outstanding piece of film making but also as a platform for progressive contemporary design.
The name Djinn comes from an Islamic mythological spirit that can change shape, from human to animal.

The chairs have a ‘Wave like’, low slung silhouette and are made from tubular steel, covered in foam padding.
Upholstered in jersey fabric, the single and doubled seated versions of the chair were complimented by an ottoman, a chaise longue and a day bed.
The chairs in Kubrick’s film appear vivid red, due to set lighting but they actually have a slightly magenta pink tone to them.
Kubrick is famous for his use of color in all of his movies.
A prime example of this would be in The Shining. A movie where color was poignant in depicting various moods, scenes and even foreshadowing of certain events.

Kubrick’s Superb Use of color in The Shining
Although they emulate the 60s, they look contemporary in today’s interiors, especially when contrasted with popular white walls.
Many swanky bars and even clubs still have chairs like this in the lobby.
Liz Winnicott, Head of Chiswick Auctions Design & Interiors department comments:
“We are thrilled to offer such iconic chairs and a sofa in the same design. Specifically chosen by Kubrick for a film that pushed the boundaries on futuristic design and ideology.”
The two chairs and sofa are being offered in the upcoming Design sale at Chiswick Auctions this Tuesday, February 11th, 2020.
One chair (Lot 89) is estimated to fetch £550-650 and another chair Lot 337) is estimated at £500-£800.
While a sofa in the design is estimated to fetch £1,100-1,300
As far as movie prop prices go, that’s a steal!
