Back in October 2018 The Conjuring 3 was announced but everyone was eagerly asking the question what is The Conjuring 3 about?
Fast forward to 2020 and with The Conjuring 3 release date scheduled for September 11th this year we have a few more details of whats in store for us all.
What is The Conjuring 3 About?
Steering away from the ‘family cases’ as shown in the first two movies we are focusing on a real-life murder trial. The infamous ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ case.
The case revolved around a man who claimed to have been possessed at the time of the crime and claimed a demon possessed him and made him commit the murder.
The Devil Made Me Do It Case
It sure is! For the first time in American history the defendant used demonic possession as a reason for committing murder.
The infamous ‘Devil Made Me Do It’ case revolved around the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson.
Arne Cheyenne Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter on November 24, 1981 for killing his landlord Alan Bono.
According to the Glazel family testimony, 11 year old David Glatzel had allegedly been possessed. After numerous disturbing events within the household they enlisted the help of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren.
An exorcism took place on a now infamous rocking chair that is now in the possession of Ghost Adventures TV presenter Zak Bagans. The chair now resides in Zak’s Haunted Museum in Las Vegas.
After the exorcism it was said the the demon entered Arne Cheyenne Johnson’s body. Several months later Arne killed his landlord.
The judge ruled that demonic possession could never be proven and as a result Johnson was convicted to a 10-20 year sentence but he only served 5 years.
James Wan on The Conjuring 3
Whilst James Wan won’t be in the director’s chair for this third instalment. He is a producer on the project thou however and contributed to the story.
Speaking to Bloody Disgusting back in 2018 he said:
“It’s not necessarily based on an artifact but it’s based on one of the Warrens’ case files.
It’s this guy who was on trial for committing a murder. I think it’s the first time in America’s history where the defendant used possessions as a reason, as an excuse.
All the Conjuring films are based on the case files, so they’re more based on the true story aspect of the real life Warrens. I think that’s important.
It’s important that the mothership stays true to the inspiration of the real people. The spinoffs are where we get to have more fun and do weird and wonderful crazy things.
The mothership of it being the Conjuring films, we want it to come back to the real stuff.”
Michael Chaves will serve as director on The Conjuring 3 after his impressive directorial debut on The Curse of La Llorona.
