Trolls World Tour Review

Synopsis

Poppy and Branch discover that there are six different troll tribes scattered over six different lands.

Each tribe is also devoted to six different kinds of music — funk, country, techno, classical, pop and rock.

When rockers Queen Barb and King Thrash set out to destroy the other music, Poppy and Branch embark on a daring mission to unite the trolls and save the diverse melodies from becoming extinct.

Trolls World Tour clocks in at just over 90 minutes but manages to add humor, heart and discuss such topics as musical appropriation and culture all in its speedy runtime.

What is Trolls World Tour About?

TROLLS WORLD TOUR
(from left) Mr. Dinkles (Kevin Michael Richardson), Biggie (James Corden), Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) in DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour, directed by Walt Dohrn.

Our story begins with Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) who are going about their business in the village until the village learns that the world is much bigger than they thought.

Various Trolls from across the land (six to be exact) all revolve around various different genres of music. Poppy is a Pop Troll and other genres include Rock, Funk, Classical, Techno and Country trolls.

Other sub-genres do exist in the troll world with some hilarious K-pop trolls appearing later in the movie.

The kingdoms were split up many years ago when the Rock Trolls attacked. Now Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom) is on a mission to take control of the lands and turning all other genres to dust.

Converting everyone in the land to the world of rock with the power of a magical guitar that needs all 6 strings (for each genre) to control the Troll world.

Trolls World Tour absolutely flies by. It looks absolutely incredible, it’s so colorful and vibrant and delicious to look at. The plot does feel a bit all over the show with so many things going on but it’s all part of the fun.

The movie is laugh-out-loud funny in places including a memorable smooth jazz scene and even a certain hip-hop baby troll that appears early in the movie.

Trolls World Tour Soundtrack

Barb (Rachel Bloom) in DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour, directed by Walt Dohrn.

Music for young and old alike and with singers such as Mary J Blige, Kelly Clarkson and Sam Rockwell amongst the roster. You’re certainly in good company. Ozzy Osbourne also makes a short-lived cameo playing the role of Queen Barb’s father.

The movie also addresses the various genres of music and does somewhat have its biases. Painting rock to be the evil ones who just want to control everything. Addressing pop to be a poor genre and associating country music with hillbillies and buck-tooth horses. We all know that just isn’t the case.

As the film reaches its conclusions these judgments are all wrapped up and whilst trying to teach us a lesson it seems as thou the film has taught itself a lesson too in the process.

Overall

Trolls World Tour Hillbillies

Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake deliver some tasty musical numbers and their harmonizing makes my ears fuzzy and the hairs on the back of my neck tingle.

Such a perfect pairing to voice two wonderful characters and the animation (as always) is flawless.

I did personally feel as thou the film should have focused on one-side of the story.

Our side story of another troll looking to find his long-lost family was almost splitting the film in two.

Whilst splitting the movie off like that didn’t make much sense to me a child isn’t going to care less which way the film goes as long as it’s funny and they enjoy it and that’s what it’s all about.

The second the movie finished I whipped on some smooth jazz as I tried so hard to get the image I’d just seen out of my head. It’s such a great scene and certainly a highlight.

Seeing Poppy, Branch, and Biggie (Voiced by James Corden) performing pop classics in front of the country music Trolls is certainly another scene to thoroughly enjoy.

From Crazy Train to Rock You Like a Hurricane Trolls World Tour rocks from start to finish and is well worth checking out!

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, Universal has decided to release Trolls World Tour on streaming services early.

You can check out the movie right now!

Summary

Whilst not as good as the original movie for me personally Trolls World Tour has enough to keep you entertained from start to finish.

A fun feel-good bundle of family entertainment that certainly uplifts the mood in these uncertain times we’re currently living in.
